Namaste 🙏 Based on your history, this seems like a chronic Kapha accumulation in the throat region (Urdhwajatrugata Kapha), and sometimes it can also be aggravated by post-nasal drip, cold weather exposure in Canada, dryness from indoor heating, or mild acid reflux. Since nasal sprays haven’t helped and this has been ongoing for months, don’t worry—this is commonly manageable with proper medicines and lifestyle correction. Ayurvedic Medicines: ✅ Sitopaladi Churna – 1/2 teaspoon with honey, twice daily after food (Helps reduce thick sticky phlegm and soothes throat) ✅ Talisadi Churna – 1/2 teaspoon with warm water, morning and night (Useful for chronic Kapha congestion) ✅ Vyoshadi Vatakam / Lavangadi Vati – 1 tablet to suck slowly 3 times daily (Reduces throat mucus and clears irritation) ✅ Anu Tailam nasal drops – 2 drops in each nostril in morning (Only if comfortable and if no severe sinus blockage) Home remedies: Sip warm water throughout the day Avoid refrigerated foods/drinks Avoid curd at night, bananas, excess sweets, and cold milk Take turmeric + dry ginger pinch in warm water at night if tolerated Steam inhalation once daily can help loosen mucus Since you are living in Canada: Cold climate and indoor heaters can dry nasal passages and worsen mucus formation. Using a humidifier at night may help. Important: Because you are 83 years old, if you develop: difficulty swallowing breathing difficulty weight loss blood in sputum persistent severe cough please consult an ENT/physician promptly to rule out other causes. This condition often improves gradually with consistent treatment. Since your appetite and sleep are good, that’s a very positive sign 😊 With proper Kapha management, you should start feeling relief in throat heaviness and mucus accumulation.

Hello dear, Managing chronic phlegm (Kapha) in the elderly requires a focus on clearing the respiratory tract and strengthening the digestive fire (Agni), especially in cold climates like Canada. From an Ayurvedic perspective, this condition is often seen as a combination of Kasa (cough) and Pratishyaya (congestion) caused by an imbalance of Kapha and Vata. The accumulation of phlegm in the morning and night suggests a Kapha dominance exacerbated by the cold environment. When the digestive fire is weak, it produces Ama (metabolic toxins) which manifests as excess mucus. In the elderly, Vata is also naturally high, which can make the phlegm sticky and difficult to expel. Prescription : 1. Dasamoolarishtam: A primary liquid ferment to balance Vata and Kapha while boosting immunity. Dose: 20 ml twice daily after food with an equal quantity of lukewarm water. 2. Agasthya Rasayanam: A classical herbal jam specifically for chronic respiratory issues and “tightness” in the chest or throat. Dose: 1 tablespoon (10–15g) twice daily, preferably with warm water or honey, before food. 3. Karpooradi Thailam: For external application to help liquefy the phlegm. Usage: Apply a few drops to the chest and throat area, rub gently, and apply a warm compress or take a warm shower afterward. Sip warm water throughout the day to help thin the mucus. Since you are in Canada, strictly avoid refrigerated drinks, yogurt, and heavy sweets in the evening, as these significantly increase Kapha. Use plain steam or add a drop of Eucalyptus oil before bed to clear the nasal passages and throat.

Excessive thick phlegm in the throat for a long duration is commonly related in Ayurveda to Kapha aggravation with weak digestion (Mandagni) and mucus accumulation in the respiratory channels (Pranavaha Srotas). In elderly age and cold climates like Canada, this condition often becomes chronic due to dryness, cold exposure, dairy intake, and reduced digestive fire. The good thing is that your appetite and sleep are good, which is a positive sign for recovery. Ayurvedic Management 1. Useful Ayurvedic Medicines Sitopaladi Churna – 1 tsp with honey twice daily after meals Helps reduce sticky phlegm and soothes throat irritation. Talisadi Churna – useful if there is heaviness, throat congestion, or cough tendency. Yashtimadhu (Licorice) powder – small quantity with warm water can soothe throat passages. Trikatu Churna (very small dose) – improves digestion and reduces Kapha accumulation. Avoid excess if acidity is present. Chyawanprash – 1 tsp in morning with warm water/milk may improve respiratory immunity in elderly persons. 2. Simple Home Remedies Sip warm water throughout the day; avoid cold water completely. Morning and bedtime: Warm water + pinch of turmeric + little dry ginger. Steam inhalation with: Ajwain (carom seeds) or eucalyptus oil once daily. Gargling with warm salt water helps clear mucus coating. 3. Diet Recommendations Avoid Kapha-increasing foods: Cold drinks Ice cream Yogurt/curd at night Cheese and excess dairy Fried and heavy foods Banana at night Prefer: Warm soups Ginger, black pepper, turmeric Light freshly cooked meals Herbal teas with tulsi and ginger 4. Lifestyle Advice Keep neck and chest protected from cold weather. Avoid sleeping immediately after dinner. Gentle breathing exercises and slow walking help mucus drainage. Use a humidifier indoors if heating causes dryness.

Thank you for sharing your concerns in detail Since this phlegm formation has been persistent throughout the year especially during night and early morning and nasal sprays have not given much relief it may not be just a simple nasal issue In Ayurveda this kind of thick sticky mucus is often related to aggravated Kapha along with age related Vata imbalance which can affect the throat sinus region and digestion over time Cold climate heavy mucus forming foods late dinners cold water curd banana refrigerated items and sometimes silent acidity can contribute to continuous throat congestion and phlegm accumulation even when appetite and sleep are otherwise good Taking warm water frequently through the day avoiding cold foods and drinks especially at night and keeping dinner light and early may help reduce mucus gradually Gentle steam inhalation before sleep may also help loosen the sticky mucus naturally Sleeping with the head slightly elevated can sometimes reduce night time throat congestion Vyoshadi Vatakam one tablet three times daily after food slowly chewing and swallowing Dasamoolakatutrayam Kashayam 15 ml with 45 ml warm water twice daily before food and Taleesapatradi Choornam half teaspoon with honey twice daily after food may help reduce thick Kapha and throat congestion gradually If there is associated dryness irritation or throat clearing Yashtimadhu can also be helpful in mild quantity depending on sugar levels and BP Since you are 83 it is important to choose medicines carefully according to your body condition blood pressure sugar digestion and other ongoing medications so proper supervision is always better before continuing long term An ENT evaluation is also important if not already done to rule out chronic sinus congestion throat irritation or silent reflux because in many elderly patients constant throat phlegm can come from these causes even without cough or acidity symptoms With proper dietary correction gentle Ayurvedic support and regular follow up many people do notice gradual improvement in chronic mucus formation over time

According to Ayurveda, persistent thick phlegm in the throat is commonly related to an imbalance of Kapha dosha, sometimes combined with weak digestion (Mandagni) leading to excess mucus formation. Cold weather, dairy, heavy foods, late dinners, and reduced digestive fire with age can contribute. –Assessment: Kapha predominance with chronic Kaphaja Gala Shleshma / post-nasal mucus accumulation, associated with Mandagni. –Advice: - Warm water frequently - Avoid cold foods/drinks, curd at night, banana, sweets, fried food - Early light dinner - Steam inhalation once daily Ayurvedic Medicines - Sitopaladi Churna 2 gm + Honey — BD after meals - Talisadi Churna 2 gm — BD - Yashtimadhu Khanda 3 gm — HS with warm water - Khadiradi Vati — suck 2 tabs TDS —Follow up: Review after 2 weeks.

At age 83, chronic thick phlegm throughout the year is commonly related to a combination of: • Chronic post-nasal drip • Dry cold climate (Canada) • Kapha accumulation • Mild chronic airway irritation/reflux Since nasal sprays did not help much, focus should now be on thinning mucus + reducing Kapha + improving throat clearance gently. What helps most: Avoid: • Cold water, yogurt at night, banana at night • Excess milk/sweets • Sleeping immediately after dinner Very useful: • Warm water sipping all day • Steam inhalation once daily • Humidifier in bedroom during dry weather • Keep chest/throat warm in winter Home remedies: • Small piece fresh ginger + honey • Tulsi-ginger tea • Turmeric milk at night if it does not increase mucus Ayurvedic support: Sitopaladi churna – ½ tsp with honey twice daily Talisadi churna – ½ tsp twice daily Vasavaleha – 1 tsp twice daily Yastimadhu tablet – 1 twice daily if throat irritation present If mucus is worse after meals or lying down, silent reflux may also contribute. Important: Please do not ignore if there is: • weight loss • blood in sputum • wheezing • breathlessness • recurrent chest infections In that case, chest evaluation and ENT review are important. With regular routine, many elderly patients get noticeable relief within 3–6 weeks. Regards, Dr Raghuveer (Ayurvedacharya)
