Should I take mass gainer before or after workout for optimal results? - #22057

Lillian

I am really confused about when to take my mass gainer. I’ve been hitting the gym pretty hard lately and it's like my body just isn’t responding the way i thought it would. I’ve read tons of stuff online, but u can't seem to figure out what's actually best — mass gainer before or after workout? Lately, my schedule’s been a mess too. Some days I hit the gym early in the morning and with other days, it's in the evening. I tried taking the mass gainer before, but then i feel kinda sluggish and don't have the energy to push through my sets. Other times, I'll do it after, and while that's better for my hunger, I'm worried I'm missing out on muscle gains or something. Also, I do notice when I skip it, I don’t feel as full post workout, so it’s like a catch 22! I talked to my trainer, but he was kinda vague, saying it just depends on the person. But what if I’m doing it wrong? Shouldn’t there be a clear answer? Like, is there science backing up one way over another? I want to maximize gains, duh! But I don't know, should I just keep experimenting? I am kinda stressed about it because I've seen some amazing results from others, and it feels like I'm not getting there fast enough. Anyone else been in the same boat? What have u found works best for you and when do you think is the prime time for mass gainer before or after workout? Help me out, pls!

The timing of when to take a mass gainer can indeed be quite confusing, especially when you’re earnest about optimizing your workout results. From an Ayurvedic perspective, considering both your dosha constitution and lifestyle is essential.

Firstly, understanding your body’s constitution (prakriti) is crucial. For someone with a Vata or Pitta tendency, taking a mass gainer before a workout might sometimes cause heaviness or sluggishness, which you have already experienced. This is because these constitutions can have a higher digestive fire (agni), and a heavy meal might dampen it temporarily, making you feel less energetic.

If you’re finding that taking it before your workout is making you sluggish, then taking your mass gainer after your workout is a better option. After exercise, your body’s dhatus (tissues) are in a receptive state and can better assimilate nutrients, rebuilding muscle efficiently. Ayurveda emphasizes following natural hunger cues, so if taking it after helps with hunger and fullness, it aligns well with enhancing your body’s natural digestion and tissue nourishment.

To enhance its digestion, take the mass gainer within 30 minutes post-workout to help replenish glycogen stores and aid muscle recovery. Make sure your digestive fire is supported by considering warm water with ginger or herbal teas during the day, which can enhance assimilation and avert sluggishness.

If your workout schedule varies between morning and evening, consistency with your meal timings and snacks can make a big difference too. For morning workouts, a lighter, balanced meal of fruits, nuts, or a small smoothie can prepare your body without overwhelming it. In the evenings, ensure you have a gap of at least a couple of hours after a meal before the workout.

Also, align your lifestyle with holistic practices like adequate sleep, relaxation techniques, and perhaps yoga – all of these stabilize stress levels and enhance muscle recovery. Remember, the key is personal experimentation, but within the realm of what supports your unique constitution and lifestyle. If stress persists, consider consulting an Ayurvedic physician personally to delve deeper into individual nuances. Good luck!

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
