What are the best rheumatoid arthritis treatments in Ayurveda, and how effective are they? - #11337

Anonymously

My mother has been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for years, and while modern medicine helps manage the pain, it doesn’t seem to address the underlying inflammation or progression of the disease. I’ve been researching rheumatoid arthritis treatment in Ayurveda because I’ve heard that it offers a holistic approach to managing this condition. From what I understand, Ayurveda refers to rheumatoid arthritis as "Amavata" and focuses on detoxifying the body and balancing the doshas. Are treatments like Panchakarma effective for reducing inflammation and joint pain? How does it work, and does it require visiting a specialized Ayurvedic center? I’ve also read about herbal remedies like guggul, ashwagandha, and giloy being used for rheumatoid arthritis. Are these the best options for reducing stiffness and swelling, and how should they be consumed? Additionally, does Ayurveda recommend any specific dietary changes to complement the treatment, such as avoiding sour and heavy foods? If anyone has experience with rheumatoid arthritis treatment in Ayurveda, I’d love to hear about the remedies or therapies that worked for you and how long it took to see improvements.

Ayurveda views rheumatoid arthritis (Amavata) as a condition caused by Ama (toxins) accumulation and an imbalance in Vata and Kapha doshas. Treatment focuses on detoxification, reducing inflammation, and strengthening joints. Panchakarma therapy, particularly Virechana (purging) and Basti (medicated enema), is highly effective in removing toxins, reducing stiffness, and improving mobility. These treatments are best done at an Ayurvedic center under expert supervision for long-term relief. Herbal remedies like Guggul, Ashwagandha, Giloy, and Turmeric are commonly used to reduce swelling, strengthen immunity, and relieve joint pain. Guggul helps with inflammation, Ashwagandha improves joint strength, and Giloy boosts immunity while detoxifying the system. These herbs can be taken as tablets, decoctions, or churnas based on an Ayurvedic doctor's recommendation. Additionally, Dashmool Kwath and Triphala are helpful for pain management and digestion. Diet and lifestyle modifications are crucial in Ayurvedic treatment. Patients are advised to avoid sour, cold, and heavy foods like curd, processed foods, and fried items, as they aggravate Kapha and Ama accumulation. A diet rich in warm, light, and easily digestible foods like moong dal, cooked vegetables, and herbal teas is recommended. Gentle exercises like yoga, oil massage (Abhyanga with warm sesame oil), and pranayama can further improve flexibility and pain relief. If you or someone you know has tried Ayurvedic treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, sharing your experiences could be very insightful!
