How can papaya in periods help alleviate menstrual discomfort? - #21783

Mateo

I am curious about this whole papaya in periods thing. So like, I've been experiencing some heavy cramping the last few cycles and honestly, it’s been kinda unbearable. 💔 I remember my friend mentioning how she used to eat papaya during her periods, saying it helped her a lot. I thought it was a bit weird but now, I'm considering trying it out, especially since I’ve seen it pop up in a few articles online! What really got me thinking was when I heard that papaya can help with menstrual flow, like, does that mean eating it will make things more regular or will it actually help with the pain? I mean, I don't want my flow to go crazy but at the same time, if papaya in periods could ease cramps or even make the days a bit lighter, why not explore it, right? I've tried so many different things from hot water bottles to medications but I've never really looked at foods helping with my periods. 🤔 I did a bit of research and found out that papaya contains some enzymes or something that might help tone the uterus and promote regular periods. What’s up with that? Are there like particular ways to prepare papaya or does it just have to be fresh? Another thing is that I can get really bloated during my periods and it feels so uncomfortable 😩. I wonder if incorporating papaya in periods could help that as well? Like, would it maybe reduce bloating? I mean, if it helps the cramps, could it possibly help with the other symptoms too? I just wanna figure out if this is some sort of miracle fruit or just another myth. I'm super excited yet slightly skeptical about the whole papaya in periods concept. Should I just try eating it raw, or like, are there smoothies or recipes I should think about? My appetite changes a lot during my menstrual cycle, so I don't want to waste anything! Has anyone here actually experienced changes or relief from cramps after adding papaya to their diet? I really hope this doesn’t end up making things worse! Any advice would be great!

Doctors' responses

Raw papaya increase the uterine contraction hence consuming it during heavy menstruation it is not advisable By considering the potency of papaya it helps in bloating during periods so it is advisable where patients is having scanty flow of menstruation along with bloating Papaya as raw fruit is having effect on the menstrual cycle compared to the papaya as smoothie…as it is not recommended much because of change in the quality of food when it is mixed with milk it decreases the potency of papaya

Papaya has been recognized in Ayurveda for its potential benefits during menstruation, largely due to its properties that support digestive and reproductive health. The fruit contains an enzyme called papain, which may help in stimulating and regulating menstrual flow. This can support those experiencing irregular periods, but you’re mainly concerned about cramps and bloating, so let’s focus there.

Eating papaya during your period could help with cramping thanks to its muscle-relaxant properties. Papain promotes blood flow to the uterus, which might assist in reducing the intensity of muscle contractions causing those cramps. It’s also rich in anti-inflammatory compounds which may help alleviate the discomfort.

As for bloating, papaya’s digestive enzymes could indeed help. These enzymes aid digestion, potentially reducing that uncomfortable bloated feeling. This might make you feel lighter and a bit more comfortable during your cycle.

For maximum benefit, consider eating papaya a few days leading up to and during your period. Fresh, ripe papaya can be consumed raw — into small cubes or slices. It’s fairly versatile, so if you’re not a fan of the texture or taste, you can blend it into a smoothie with yogurt, a dash of honey, or even mix with other fruits like banana or berries.

Regarding your concern about regularity or intensity of your flow, papaya should not lead to excessive bleeding or cause disruption more than usual; rather, it would support more regulated flow if that’s an issue.

In terms of preparation, keeping it simple can often be best. Try eating a small bowl of ripe papaya every morning for a few days and observe how your body reacts to it.

Yet, remember we’re all unique. If you try papaya and notice unusual changes, seek professional guidance. Be mindful too, not to overdo it - moderation is key. If symptoms like cramps continue to be severe, consider consulting with a healthcare provider to explore other remedies or investigations that might be needed, just to ensure there isn’t another underlying issue at play.
