what happens if we don't masturbate - #39054

Wyatt

I am really curious and a bit worried, honestly. I've been reading a lot about the effects of not masturbating, and there's just so much information out there. I mean, I've gone through phases where I just lost interest and didn’t do anything for months at a time. But then I was talking to a friend who said that if we don’t masturbate, it could lead to a bunch of weird issues?? Like, I don’t know, anxiety or even impact my mood. Is that true? More than once, I felt kind of on edge, and sometimes I feel like maybe it’s connected to not being active in that area. Other times, I think maybe... maybe it's just life stress? I had this huge project at work, which honestly made me really neglect my needs, and now I'm starting to think that I might've messed something up. Like, what happens if we don't masturbate? Is it even a part of being healthy or something? I seriously can’t tell if it’s just normal or if my body might start acting up in some way. And also, I keep questioning if there are any long-term effects? Would love to hear from you guys about this!

In Ayurveda, understanding one’s prakriti, or natural constitution, is essential in assessing the impact of any lifestyle choices, including sexual activity and masturbation. Masturbation is a part of natural human behavior for many, but the effects of abstaining are quite individual. The idea of masturbation as a health need doesn’t hold universal truth in Ayurvedic terms—it’s not inherently harmful to abstain, nor necessary for health. What matters is how it aligns with your dosha, lifestyle, and personal wellbeing.

If you feel anxious or on edge, this might relate more to vata imbalance, which governs movement and communication in the body. Vata can become imbalanced due to irregular routines, stress, or overthinking, leading to anxiety or restlessness. Masturbation could potentially serve as a temporary pacifying activity for vata, but it doesn’t address the root cause of imbalance.

The notion that lack of masturbation leads to anxiety or mood issues can be misleading; lifestyle factors, stressors, and personal health practices often have a more substantial effect. If you’re experiencing stress, consider grounding activities like regular sleep routine, massage with warm sesame oil, or practicing slow, deep breathing to soothe vata.

Prolonged abstinence from masturbation won’t typically lead to long-term negative health effects. Ayurveda encourages moderation rather than over-reliance on any particular habit. Focus on balancing agni (digestive fire) with a diet suitable for your dosha, maintaining rhythm in daily activities, and finding expression for body energy in ways that align with your health and lifestyle.

If feelings of anxiety persist, reflect upon lifestyle elements beyond sexual expression: diet, exercise, environment. Focus on nourishing your body with grounding foods—warm, cooked meals with spices like ginger and cumin to balance vata—while practicing mindfulness activities to center your mind. Balance and self-awareness are key, rather than specific acts. Remember, health is multifaceted, engaging body, mind, and spirit.
