what happens if you masturbate too much - #39816

Levi

I am really confused about something... I've been reading a lot lately and I keep stumbling upon this question: what happens if you masturbate too much? Like, at first, I thought it was normal, but I’ve been feeling really weird lately. So, here’s the thing — I’ve been doing it like 2, sometimes 3 times a day, especially during this past month while trying to deal with stress and junk from work. But now I’ve started to notice some stuff. I feel pretty drained, even lazy like I can’t get motivated to do anything! My focus is off too, and sometimes I feel a bit of pain down there, not sure what's up with that. Is this normal? Also heard some people mention that it could affect my mood, or even my testosterone levels? I mean, I don’t wanna sound dumb, but I’m just curious, what happens if you masturbate too much? Is there health risks I should worry about or is it all just talk? Kinda scared that I might be doing something wrong here! Help!

Doctors' responses

Masturbation, while generally considered a natural and safe activity, can become excessive and potentially affect one’s physical and mental health. In Ayurveda, any activity, if done excessively, can disturb the balance of your doshas—Vata, Pitta, Kapha—and negatively affect your Agni (digestive fire), your dhatus (body tissues), and overall Prakriti (constitution).

Frequent masturbation may lead to feelings of lethargy and low energy, as you’ve noticed. The reason being, excessive release may deplete your Ojas—the subtle essence derived from healthy digestion that promotes vitality and immunity. When Ojas is low, you might feel fatigued and less motivated and potentially experience reduced focus. In Ayurveda, every bodily activity should be balanced, to support health and wellness without depleting vital energies.

You mentioned pain and a decreased ability to focus. Physically, too much friction can cause irritation or soreness, which may be what’s causing your discomfort. Psychologically, over-reliance on masturbation as a coping mechanism for stress might lead to increased anxiety or depressive symptoms, potentially destabilizing mood over time.

Regarding testosterone, while short-term variations are possible due to orgasm, there’s not conclusive scientific evidence that masturbation significantly alters hormone levels long-term. But if you’re worried or noticing persistent changes in mood or energy, it may be worth consulting with a healthcare provider.

For balance, consider diverting energy into different de-stress techniques, such as regular physical exercising, yoga or meditation. Practicing mindfulness activities can increase focus and reduce anxiety. Dietary changes like incorporating Ojas-boosting foods (like almonds, ghee, milk) can support your overall energy levels. Practicing moderation and introducing rest periods during the day can also support maintaining energy balance.

If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare professional is crucial to help identify the root causes and develop a personalized approach suited to your individual needs.
