can we take amla and aloe vera juice together - #43026

Isabella

I am really confused right now about my health routine. Lately, I've been trying to eat healthier and add some natural supplements into my diet. I heard that amla juice is super good for immunity and skin, and also that aloe vera juice can help with digestion and detoxing. My cousin swears by both, but I don’t wanna mess things up! Last week I started taking amla juice, and while it wasn’t too bad, it kinda made my stomach feel weird, especially if I had it on an empty stomach. Then, I thought about trying aloe vera juice too. But then I thought, can we take amla and aloe vera juice together, like at the same time? That might be a silly question, but I’m honestly not sure what’s safe. I read a bit online but got conflicting info. Some people say it’s great for you, while others say mixing can be harsh? I just want to know if it’s okay to combine them or if I should stagger them or somethg? Any advice would be super helpful! Like, anyone tried this combo??

Doctors' responses

You can indeed take amla and aloe vera juice together, and many people do find benefits when combining them, but it’s essential to consider some important aspects to make sure it’s suitable for you. Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is known in Ayurveda for its rejuvenating and immunity-boosting properties. It’s rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, making it great for the skin and overall vitality. Similarly, aloe vera is appreciated for its soothing effects on the digestive system and its detoxifying abilities.

However, the key here is moderation and timing, especially considering you’ve felt stomach discomfort after taking amla juice on an empty stomach. It’s often recommended to take aloe vera juice early in the morning on an empty stomach for maximum benefit to digestion, but if amla juice is uncomfortable for you this way, you might want to adjust.

Here’s a suggestion that might work for you: Try starting your day with a small amount of aloe vera juice, about 20 to 30 ml (roughly 1 to 2 tablespoons), diluted with water. This can gently prime your digestion. Later, about 30 minutes after having breakfast, you could consume a small quantity of amla juice, about 20 ml diluted in water.

The idea is to introduce them separately into your routine at first to see how your body reacts before combining them, and always start with smaller amounts before gradually increasing. It’s also essential to consider your personal dosha and any specific health conditions that might react differently to these supplements.

For some individuals, taking both in one go might be too detoxifying or heating, so observe how your body responds. If you notice any persistent discomfort or adverse reactions, it would be wise to pause and consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can offer personalized advice based on your specific constitution and any underlying health issues.

Taking amla juice and aloe vera juice together is generally safe and can offer complementary benefits, but there are a few things to consider based on Ayurvedic principles. Amla (Indian gooseberry) is tridoshic, meaning it helps to balance Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas, but its sour taste can aggravate Pitta if consumed excessively. Aloe vera has cooling and soothing properties, primarily helping with Pitta imbalances and promoting digestion.

If you’re considering taking them together, it’s best to time your consumption. Given that amla can sometimes cause slight stomach discomfort if taken on an empty stomach, you might find it beneficial to take both juices after a light meal. This can reduce any potential irritation and enhance their digestion-assisting properties. Mixing half the recommended dose of each juice can be a gentle starting point until you see how your system responds.

To avoid digestive stress, ensure the aloe vera is properly sourced—free of aloin, which can be harsh for the digestive tract. Look for food-grade options. As for amla juice, freshly extracted or reputable brands help maintain its nutritive properties without adverse reactions.

It’s also prudent to reflect on the body’s response. Introducing one new item at a time helps in identifying potential sensitivities. If discomfort persists, consulting a local Ayurvedic professional will be helpful. Keep in mind lifestyle factors like diet and regularity of meals as these too influence digestive health and the effectiveness of such supplements in your routine.
