Seeking Advice for Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis Pain - #44094
Have recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis! Alongside, I have osteoarthritis in my knees, left foot and ankle, right hip and shoulders. The pain is bearable but does get worse oftentimes, particularly in the feet and ankle(top of the foot). Shoulders can be very painful too! Particularly when I’m sleeping. I sleep on my side and have to keep switching from left to right because of the pain! Is there any advice you can give to help me? Much gratitude 🙏🏼 Gauri Rastogi

Balancing vata dosha is crucial for managing both osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Osteoporosis involves your bones, while osteoarthritis affects the joints — both are aggravated by vata imbalance. Incorporating warm, nourishing foods can help. Your diet should be rich in calcium and vitamin D. Sesame seeds and milk are excellent source. Additionally, ghee is beneficial; 1 tsp mixed with warm milk before bed can help strengthen bones.
To alleviate pain, applying warm sesame oil or Mahanarayan oil gently on affected areas can provide soothing relief. Massage should be relaxing and performed in circular motions, especially around joints. For the feet and ankles, dip them into warm water with Epsom salts for about 15 minutes daily. This helps in reducing inflammation and pain.
Considering the shoulder pain while sleeping, ensure your pillow supports your neck but isn’t lifting your head too high. A pillow between the legs when sleeping on your side might provide additional comfort. Alternate therapies like gentle yoga or tai chi could help enhance flexibility and relieve stiffness — but start slow and listen to your body’s capabilities.
Ashwagandha and Shatavari, well-known for their strengthening properties, can be had as powders (1 tsp) with warm milk twice a day. Yoga Nidra can deeply relax mind and body, calming vata, and supporting sleep. Also, regular exposure to early morning sun helps with vitamin D levels in body.
Be consistent with routines. Avoid cold and windy environments which can aggravate vata. If pain worsens, consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized treatment. Ayurvedic medicines like Lakshadi Guggulu or Dashmool can be integrated after accessing your specific prakriti and current condition. Use of these should be under guidance to ensure compatibility with your unique needs.
