can ashwagandha cause gastritis - #44708

Riley

I am kind of worried about something that’s been going on. I've been using ashwagandha for a couple weeks now 'cause I heard it helps with stress and sleep, and honestly, it was working great at first!! But then, I started noticing these stomach issues, like bloating and this gnawing pain. At first, I thought it was just something I ate, but then I remember reading about how ashwagandha can cause gastritis somehow, right? I've never had stomach issues before this, and now I feel like I’m walking around with a mean stomach ache all the time. It's kind of frustrating because I wanted to feel better, and now I’m stuck dealing with this instead. I even talked to my doctor, but they weren't super clear. They mentioned that some herbal supplements might not agree with everyone, but they didn’t specifically say ashwagandha is a no-no for gastritis. Has anyone else experienced this?? Like can ashwagandha cause gastritis for some people? Should I just stop taking it altogether? I really wanna figure out what’s going on before it gets worse or something. Any thoughts or advice would be super appreciated!!!

Ashwagandha, acknowledged in Ayurveda as a revered adaptogen, can indeed be a fantastic ally for stress and sleep. Yet, like any potent remedy, it doesn’t universally suit every individual’s constitution or condition. Though not widely documented, some people might experience gastric issues such as bloating or discomfort, after using ashwagandha, specifically if they have existing digestive imbalances or a sensitive gut lining.

As per Ayurvedic principles, Ashwagandha is considered to have warming properties, and can sometimes aggravate pitta dosha, contributing to the sensations you’ve described. This particularly holds true if your fundamental constitution is predominately pitta, or if you’re grappling with a pitta imbalance, which includes symptoms like acidity or inflammation in the digestive tract. Gastritis, in Ayurveda, is a condition often rooted in an excess of pitta. When taken too frequently or in large doses, Ashwagandha could exacerbate these symptoms.

Your immediate steps should include pausing the use of ashwagandha temporarily. Observe if your symptoms alleviate over the next several days. Should you find that your stomach discomfort in fact diminishes, it’s quite likely that ashwagandha might have been a triggering agent. Meanwhile, focus on soothing your digestive system with cooling and calming foods, like rice, moong dal, and coconut water, to help counterbalance any excess pitta.

Hydration and regular meals are crucial during this time. Ensure you eat at regular intervals to maintain your digestive fire (agni) without it over-loading. Consider introducing herbs like licorice or slippery elm, which soothe the gastrointestinal tract, always in consultation with a healthcare provider to ensure safety. If symptoms persist, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner or a gastroenterologist can shed more light on your situation and provide a pathway forward.
