Doctors' responses

Muskan, your experience with PCOS suggests typical symptoms like irregular cycles and the ultrasound confirms polycystic ovaries. Experiencing discomfort and the variety of symptoms you’re facing can indeed be challenging. In Ayurveda, PCOS is mainly seen as an imbalance in Vata and Kapha doshas. Managing these through diet, herbal medicine, and lifestyle changes is key.

1. Dietary Changes: Avoid foods that increase Kapha and Vata. This means continuing to avoid sweets, processed foods, and excessive dairy. Occasionally eating non-veg like chicken or mutton is okay, but prefer lean meats and limit intake to once a week. Focus on warm, cooked foods, more vegetables like spinach, zucchini, and carrots which help balance doshas.

2. Herbal Remedies: - Start with a renewed commitment to Kanchnaar Guggulu; it is effective in reducing cysts. - Add Triphala Churna at bedtime with warm water to support digestion, promoting regular bowel movements and reducing bloating. - Consider Ashoka Vati during times of painful menstruation; it helps regulate cycles and reduce pain. - Shatavari may be uncomfortable but is too beneficial for balancing hormones and alleviating symptoms, try it again or look for an alternative form.

3. Lifestyle & Exercise: Gentle, regular exercise like walking or yoga is essential. Activities like yoga poses such as bhujangasana and malasana are good; however, intense exercise might not suit everyone. Focus on calming, grounding exercises, and consider practicing meditation or pranayama (breathing exercises) to help manage stress, which seems to aggravate your symptoms. Make sure you have enough restful sleep, which helps with stress management and hormone regulation.

4. Consistent Medication: Continue your previous medications but it’s important that you do so consistently for 3 months, as Ayurvedic treatments need time to show results.

It might also be beneficial to regularly observe your stress levels and use techniques like mindfulness or journaling to help mitigate the effects of stress on your symptoms. Also, further hormonal testing could be worth discussing with a healthcare provider to ensure a comprehensive approach to your treatment plan. Immediate medical care is crucial if symptoms like persistent pain or significant discomfort arise.

Respected Doctor,

Thank you for your guidance. I want to follow the treatment properly for PCOS.

I have one practical concern I want to clarify.

I am a BA first semester student and I go to college regularly. Because of this, midday medicine doses often get missed, and the number of medicines feels a little difficult to manage daily.

I wanted to ask:

1. Is it necessary to take all the previous medicines along with the newly suggested ones, or are there 2–3 most important medicines that I should strictly continue?

2. If possible, could you please suggest a simplified timetable (morning / evening / night) that suits a college-going routine?

3. Is there any single tonic / decoction / formulation that can be taken once or twice a day instead of multiple daytime doses?

4. Please also guide me clearly about:

which medicines should be taken before food / after food

and what kind of food timing I should maintain

I genuinely want to continue this treatment consistently for 2–3 months without breaking, so your guidance will help me a lot.

Thank you for your time and support.

Regards, Muskan

Respected Doctor,

I want to clarify a few specific food items so that I don’t remain confused while following the diet.

1. I was asking about chana–gud based items, such as:

chana gajak / chana chikki (made from roasted black chana or besan-based chana with jaggery)

Is this allowed in PCOS and white discharge condition? If yes, how frequently (occasionally or regularly)?

2. Similarly, regarding til–gud gajak / chikki, is this safe or should til be avoided?

3. If jaggery (gud) is taken in small quantity, is it acceptable or should it be strictly avoided in my condition?

4. If possible, could you please suggest a few foods or snacks on your own that are safe and helpful for:

hormonal balance

reducing white discharge

maintaining energy

I want to eat correctly without unnecessary fear or confusion and follow the treatment consistently.

Thank you for your guidance.

Regards, Muskan

To manage PCOS in your case, we should focus on regulating Kapha dosha and balancing hormones. Keep in mind, what’s suitable in Ayurveda is highly personalized, so here’s a plan tailored for you:

1. Continue with Kanchnaar Guggulu and Chandraprabha Vati: These are key in balancing Kapha and reducing ovarian cysts. Kanchnaar Guggulu helps in breaking down growths and swelling, while Chandraprabha Vati is excellent for maintaining urinary tract health and reducing inflammation.

2. Sukumaram Kashayam: This formulation can help alleviate pain and balance hormones. Stick with this if you’re already seeing some improvement in pain relief, but ensure consistency for better results.

3. Shatavari Supplement: It’s crucial for hormonal balance and nourishing reproductive tissues. Since the syrup wasn’t preferable, consider Shatavari tablets if the taste was an issue.

4. Dietary Guidelines: Keep sugars and processed foods minimal, as Kapha imbalance benefits from reduced sweet intake. Considering your occasional meat consumption, it is generally advised to limit high-fat meats like mutton due to their Kapha-increasing properties. Opt for lean cuts of chicken when you do consume non-veg. Additionally, favor freshly cooked vegetables and whole grains.

5. Herbal Tea: Boil fenugreek seeds and ginger to make a tea. Drink this twice daily to enhance digestion and help reduce bloating. Antara meal times, if preferred.

6. Yogasanas: Continue with gentle yoga and pranayama, which helps in stress reduction and improving blood circulation to the pelvic area. Practice daily but respect your body’s signals to avoid aggravating pain.

7. Stress Management: Meditation and establishing a proper sleep schedule are vital. Stress has a known effect on increasing PCOS symptoms, so incorporating mindfulness practices should be a regular part of your routine.

Lastly, it is wise to consult with a local practitioner for personalized follow-ups, ensuring the plan aligns with your ongoing health needs. If symptoms like pain or discharge increase sharply, seeking prompt modern medical advice is prudent.
