Reverting diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, with Ayurveda involves a holistic approach addressing diet, lifestyle, and herbal treatments, though its crucial to consult with your physician before making any changes to your medication regimen, including Metformin. Diabetes management is indeed complex and personalized, especially considering your age, weight, and long history with diabetes.
In Ayurveda, diabetes is often associated with an imbalance in the kapha and vata doshas leading to what is known as ‘prameha’. The aim is to balance these doshas through dietary, lifestyle adjustments and specific herbs. Here’s a thoughtful way forward, keeping your unique constitution in mind.
Diet: Emphasize a diet rich in whole grains like barley and millet, green leafy vegetables, and bitter gourd – which is known to help regulate blood sugar levels. Avoid processed foods, sugar, and high-carb meals that can spike your glucose levels. Instead, focus on foods with low glycemic index, that won’t drastically affect your blood sugar.
Lifestyle: Regular exercise is key, and since you’re already doing that, try incorporating some yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises) into your routine. These practices not just aid in maintaining weight but also help in better oxygen circulation and stress management, which can impact blood sugar control.
Herbs: Consider integrating herbs like fenugreek, amla, and neem into your daily regimen. Fenugreek seeds can be soaked overnight and consumed on an empty stomach to help regulate blood sugar. Ayuverdic preparations like Triphala can be beneficial too, as they aid in digestion and metabolism.
While it’s commendable that you’re so particular about your exercise and diet, abruptly stopping Metformin or any prescribed medication isn’t advisable without your doctor’s approval. Closely monitor your blood sugar levels while gradually integrating these Ayurvedic practices, and regular consultations with your healthcare provider can help make informed decisions about possibly adjusting your medication. Safety above all—wellness is a journey, not an instant change.
