HELLO DS,

In Ayurveda , this condition is primarily due to an imbalance of Kapha dosha (one of the three body energies- vata, pitta, kapha)

WHAT IS KAPHA? Kapha represents stability, moisture, heaviness and lubrication in the body. It keeps the throat, lungs, and sinuses moist and protected But when kapha becomes excessive or stagnant, it becomes sticky, thick mucus which accumulates in the troat and respiratory passages

SIMPLE When your digestion slows down, or when you consume cold and heavy foods, your body can’t properly digest them. This produces “Ama” (undigested toxins)- sticky waste material that mixes with kapha. This combination of Ama + kapha creates thick phlegm in your throat, especially in the morning because kapha is naturally dominant at that time of day (around 6-10 am)

TYPICAL SYMPTOMS -morning throat congestion or need to clear throat -sticky phlegm or mucus -mild cough, sometimes without fever -feeling heaviness in head or chest -loss of taste or coated tongue -possible nasal congestion or postnasal drip

TREATMENT GOALS -liquifies and expel the accumulated kapha (phlegm) -improve digestion and remove toxins -soothe the throat and respiratory tract -strenghten immunity and prevent recurrence -balance Kapha dosha

INTERNAL MEDICATIONS

1) SHITOPALADI CHURNA + HONEY= 1 tsp twice daily after meals for 6 weeks =balances kapha, acts as expectorant, and mild bronchodilator

2) TRIKATU CHURNA= 1/2 tsp with honey before meals for 4 weeks =improves digestion, melts sticky kapha

3) YASHTI MADHU CHURNA= 1/2 tsp with warm water twice daily for 3 weeks =relieves throat dryness, irritation, and inflamamtion

4) KANTAKARI AVALEHA= 1 tsp daily for 8 weeeks =relieves congestion and improves breathing

5) CHYAWANPRASHA= 1 tsp daily in morning =builds resistance, nourishes lungs

6) DASHMOOLA ARISHTA= 15ml + warm water twice daily before meals for 3 weeks =clear airways, reduces inflammation

EXTERNAL THERAPIES

1) NASYA= instill 2 drops of Anu taila in each nostril every morning =clears sinus and throat congestion, lubricates nasal passage

2) OIL PULLING= gargle with warm sesame oil or lukewarm salt water for 3 minutes =remves throat mucus , strengthens oral cavity

3) STEAM INHALATION= inhale steam with tulsi leaves, eucalyptus oil or ajwain seeds =melts kapha and clears airways

HOME REMEDIES

1) Ginger and honey mix -mix 1 tsp ginger juice + 1 tsp honey take twice daily =helps liquify mucus and soothe throat

2) Turmeric milk at night- anti inflammatory boosts immunity

3) Tulsi and black Pepper tea= boil 5 tulsi leaves + 3 black pepper + smalll piece of ginger In water- drink warm 2-3 times a day =clears mucus and relieves cough

4) Warm water sipping- keeps kapha mobile and aids digestion

5) GARGLE= twice daily with warm water + pinch of turmeric and salt

DIET -warm soups, dal, khichdi, green vegetables -spices like ginger, turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom -herbal teas- tulsi, methi, ginger -fresh fruits like pomegranate, apply, papaya -honey in moderation

AVOID -cold , refrigerated, and heavy foods -curd, cheese, butter, milk at night -sweets, sugary foods, and refined flour -fried or oily items -cold drinks and ice cream

LIFESTYLE CHANGES -wake up early before 6 am- helps natural kapha elimination -do mil exercise or walking daily -avoid sleeping during day -keep throat and chest warm -avoid exposure to cold winds and air-conditioning -practice good oral hygiene and avoid overuse of voice

YOGA ASANAS -bhujangasana= opens chest -matsyasana= clears throat -ardha matsyendrasana= improves lung function -setu bandhasana= strengthens respiratory system

PRANAYAM -Anulom vilom = balance all doshas -Kapalbhati= clears mucus from lungs -Bhramari= soothes throat and nerves

Throat congestion with phlegm is a manifestation of excess kapha and Ama , not just a simple cold. Ayurveda treat the root cause- poor digestion and kapha stagnation- not just a symptoms

DO FOLLOW

HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL

THANK YOU

DR. MAITRI ACHARYA

Balagam, or phlegm, in the throat can often be attributed to an imbalance in the body’s doshas, particularly the Kapha dosha, which governs the water and earth elements in the body. This can result in increased mucus production. To address this, consider the following Ayurvedic recommendations to help clear your throat from phlegm:

1. Dietary Modifications: Try reducing Kapha-aggravating foods such as dairy products, cold foods and drinks, and heavy, oily, or excessively sweet foods. It might help to have warm, light, and easily digestible meals. Include spices like ginger, black pepper, turmeric and cinnamon in your diet as these can help balance Kapha and support clear airways.

2. Herbal Teas: Drinking herbal teas can support the removal of phlegm. You might find benefit in a tea made from ginger, tulsi (holy basil), or licorice root. Simply boil some fresh ginger or licorice root in water for a few minutes and sip it warm. Tulsi can be added to boiling water and consumed as tea to aid respiratory function.

3. Pranayama and Yoga: Breathing exercises like Kapalbhati and Anulom Vilom pranayama can help expel phlegm and promote clearer breathing passages. Practicing them regularly, especially in the morning, can be effective. Include some warming yoga postures like Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) to stimulate the digestive fire.

4. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam from boiling water, perhaps with a drop or two of eucalyptus oil, can help loosen mucus and relieve congestion. It can be a soothing remedy for the discomfort.

5. Trikatu Churna: This is an Ayurvedic formulation made of ginger, black pepper and long pepper which can be helpful. It is known to stimulate the digestive fire and help regulate Kapha. Take it with honey after meals, as per dosage guidance from an Ayurvedic practitioner.

6. Home Remedy: A mix of honey and warm water with a pinch of black pepper and ginger powder can be consumed 2-3 times daily to help clear the throat.

Always consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before starting any new treatment to ensure it suits your individual prakriti and health needs.

To clear your throat from balgum, especially if you notice it building up in the mornings, there are several remedies within the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition that might help. This condition is often related to an imbalance in the kapha dosha, leading to increased mucus production. Here are some suggestions you might find useful:

1. Steam Inhalation: Try taking steam inhalations twice a day with a few drops of eucalyptus oil or turmeric. This can help to loosen phlegm, making it easier to expel. Boil water, add the oil or turmeric, cover your head with a towel, and inhale deeply for about ten minutes.

2. Herbal Teas: Prepare a warm tea with ginger, black pepper, and tulsi leaves. Each of these ingredients has expectorant properties that may help in reducing kapha accumulation. Drink this tea two to three times a day.

3. Dietary Adjustments: Avoid cold and oily foods which might aggravate kapha further. Incorporate light and warm meals, and include spices like cumin, coriander, and fennel to aid digestion and help balance the doshas.

4. Licorice Root: Chewing on a small piece of licorice root or drinking licorice tea can soothe the throat and reduce cough. However, use it cautiously if you have high blood pressure.

5. Exercise: Regular pranayama, like kapalbhati and anulom-vilom, can be very effective in clearing out respiratory passages and maintaining balance in the doshas.

These remedies can generally help manage phlegm buildup, but if symptoms persist or worsen, visiting an Ayurvedic practitioner or a healthcare professional may be needed. If you experience difficulty breathing or chest pain, immediate medical attention is vital as it could indicate a more serious condition.
