Persistent coughing and mucus production in the elderly can indeed be challenging. According to Ayurveda, this condition may relate to an imbalance in the Kapha dosha, which governs mucus and fluids in the body. First, it’s critical to examine his diet. Encourage him to avoid dairy products, processed foods, and cold drinks that can increase mucus production. Instead, include warm, easily digestible foods like light soups, cooked vegetables, and rice.

Incorporate spices such as black pepper, ginger, and turmeric, which help in reducing Kapha. A warm ginger tea, perhaps with a little honey, can be soothing if taken two or three times a day but avoid honey in boiling hot liquids as it can become toxic according to Ayurveda.

Next, consider using Ayurvedic remedies like Talisadi Churna or Sitopaladi Churna mixed with honey, which can be very effective in managing respiratory issues. Give about 1 teaspoon with honey twice daily to help expel excess mucus.

Steam inhalation with eucalyptus oil can be beneficial too, loosening the chest congestion. Heat some water and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil, and allow him to inhale the steam for 5 minutes, once or twice daily.

Ensure he stays hydrated with warm water, preventing thickening of mucus. Light physical activity, like gentle walks, can also assist in maintaining respiratory health.

It’s important, however, to keep his primary healthcare provider informed, monitoring for any new or worsening symptoms that may require medical attention. Regular follow-ups with his doctor are essential to rule out other underlying conditions. Adjustments may be needed based on how well these suggestions work for him.

For your father’s persistent cough and chest congestion, it can be beneficial to look into balancing his doshas, particularly Kapha, which tends to become excessive in such conditions. Focus on remedies that help balance Kapha and improve respiratory function. Here are a few suggestions based on Siddha-Ayurvedic principles:

Start by offering him warm tulsi (holy basil) tea once or twice a day. Tulsi is known for its ability to clear respiratory pathways and reduce dosha imbalance. Prepare it by boiling the leaves in water for about 10 minutes and add a bit of honey once it cools down to a drinkable temperature.

Incorporate some ginger and black pepper into his diet or as a homemade herbal tea. Both are excellent for drying up excessive mucus. Grate fresh ginger, add a pinch of black pepper, and boil them together in water. Strain it, and he can consume it twice daily.

Another effective remedy is steam inhalation. Boil water and add eucalyptus oil. Let him inhale the steam for 10-15 minutes. This can help open up the airways and alleviate the chestiness. Ensure he’s comfortable and breathing at a pace that’s easy for him.

Triphala powder can also help. It gently cleanses and balances all three doshas. Have him take about 1 teaspoon of Triphala powder with warm water at night before bed.

Monitor his diet to ensure it’s light and doesn’t aggravate Kapha. Avoid cold, heavy, and dairy foods as they can increase mucus production. Instead, warmer and spicier foods may help balance Kapha.

If his condition doesn’t improve or worsenm, especially considering his age, do seek further medical evaluation to ensure nothing more serious needs addressing.
