what to eat when you have a cold and cough - #37093

Samuel

I am feeling really rough these days. Started off with just a scratchy throat, and now I’ve got this full-blown cold and cough that just won’t quit. I’ve been trying to drink lots of fluids, but honestly, it’s hard to know what to eat when you have a cold and cough. My appetite is pretty much non-existent. I’ve tried some chicken soup that my mom swears by, but not sure if it’s doing anything. Last night, I attempted to have some ginger tea with honey, thinking it would soothe my throat, but it just made me feel even more congested! I feel like I’m constantly battling this thing. Should I be sticking to just liquids, or are there solid foods out there that are good for what to eat when you have a cold and cough? I was wondering if there’s specific stuff that could help boost my immune system or, like, settle my stomach since I feel kind of queasy too. I read somewhere about eating garlic, but I really can’t stomach much besides plain rice and maybe some applesauce right now. Does anyone have any good ideas or suggestions? I mean, what to eat when you have a cold and cough, that actually doesn’t make you want to gag?! I'm lost and could really use some solid advice.

When dealing with a cold and cough, the key is to support your body’s natural healing process while keeping digestion light and efficient. Ayurveda suggests focusing on warm, easy-to-digest foods that balance your doshas, especially if you’re feeling queasy.

Start with light, warm foods like rice and applesauce, which are gentle on your stomach. Adding a little fresh ginger and black pepper to your rice can help stimulate your Agni, or digestive fire, without overwhelming it. Sip ginger tea without honey as honey can sometimes exacerbate congestion, particularly if it isn’t organic or processed.

A simple Moong dal khichdi, which combines rice and split mung beans, can be an excellent choice; it’s nourishing and balances Vata and Kapha doshas, which are likely increased during a cold. Use ghee in your preparation – it has soothing properties and supports digestion.

Garlick and Turmeric milk may also help boost your immune system. Heat a cup of milk, add a pinch of turmeric, and a small clove of crushed garlic. Drink warm, once a day – it may not be to everyone’s taste, but it’s a potent therapeutic aid. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties, coupled with garlic’s immune-boosting benefits, can be effective.

Steamed vegetables such as carrots, beets, and greens are beneficial, avoiding heavy, raw, or cold foods till you recover. Seasonal, ripe fruits like pears can be good once peeled and cooked into a compote if you can handle them.

Avoid anything that’s too spicy, cold, or heavy to digest during this period. Stay hydrated with warm water, perhaps adding a squeeze of lemon to support hydration and vitamin C intake.

Lastly, in term of boosting immunity, maintaining rest and managing stress is as crucial as diet. If symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Complications from colds and coughs can manifest unpredictably, requiring professional care.
