is yogurt good for hair - #37729

Lucas

I am having this ongoing issue where my hair seems really dry and lifeless. I've tried a bunch of different products, but nothing seems to work long term. A friend mentioned that I should try using yogurt in my hair, saying that is yogurt good for hair and can really help with dryness. I mean, I love yogurt, but using it on my hair? That feels a bit strange! Anyway, I looked it up and read a few articles, but they all say different things. Some say it helps with hydration and even adds shine, while others say it might not be great for all hair types. My hair is kinda curly, thick, and sometimes it gets frizzy, you know? It's like one day it looks great and the next, it's a total mess! I've tried coconut oil too, but I feel like it just makes it greasy. Has anyone actually used yogurt as a treatment? Like, how do I even apply it? Do I mix it with something or use it plain? Also, I’m worried about the smell and making a huge mess, cause the last thing I need is my bathroom smelling like yogurt forever. Anyway, any advice on whether is yogurt good for hair or if there's a better option out there would be super helpful!

Yogurt can indeed be beneficial for hair, especially for those facing dryness and lack of life. According to Ayurvedic principles, yogurt is known for its hydrating properties because it’s rich in lactic acid and proteins, which can help restore moisture and smoothness to the hair. It acts as a natural conditioner that aids in managing frizz, particularly beneficial for curly and thick hair types like yours. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that yogurt might not work to everyone, but it’s worth trying, given its natural attributes.

To apply yogurt to your hair, use plain, full-fat yogurt for best results. Avoid flavored or sweetened types, as they can contain additives not beneficial for your hair health. Here’s how you can go about it:

1. Begin by dampening your hair slightly with lukewarm water. This helps in the better absorption of nutrients.

2. Take about half to one cup of yogurt, depending on hair length and thickness. You can apply it directly or mix it with a tablespoon of honey or aloe vera gel for added hydration and smoothness. Honey tends to lock in moisture, while aloe vera provides additional soothing benefits.

3. Gently massage the yogurt or the yogurt mixture into your scalp and along the hair shafts. Focus on the ends, as they tend to be dryer.

4. Let it sit for about 20-30 minutes. You might want to cover your head with a shower cap to avoid drips.

5. Rinse thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water, and follow with a mild shampoo if desired.

Regarding the smell, it typically fades once you rinse your hair. However, if the scent bothers you, you could add a drop of essential oil, like lavender or rosemary, to the yogurt mixture.

If yogurt doesn’t quite do the trick, there are other natural remedies worth trying: Amla (Indian Gooseberry) is another valuable Ayurvedic treatment for hair health. Amla powder can be mixed with water to form a paste and applied like a hair mask; it promotes shine and strengthens hair. Again, each hair type is unique, so integrating these remedies and observing how your hair responds could ultimately be a personalised journey to finding what brings out the best in your hair’s natural texture and health.

In your case, it may also help to monitor your overall diet and lifestyle since hair health is closely linked to internal wellbeing according to Ayurveda. Ensuring a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and managing stress can support your external hair care efforts, ensuring they are more effective in the long run.
