how to store rosemary water - #40255

Owen

I am really confused about how to store rosemary water. A few weeks ago, I made this big batch of rosemary water for my hair, after reading how amazing it is for promoting growth and shine. But now I’m not sure if I did it right. I put it in this glass bottle and left it in the fridge, but I’ve heard that it can go bad quickly. Like, I’m worried it might spoil or something. I’ve noticed a bit of a weird smell and I'm not sure if it’s normal or what? I’ve used it a couple times and my hair seems to like it, but then again, I also read something about the best methods to keep it fresh. I mean, should I be using plastic instead of glass or maybe keep it in a dark cabinet instead of the fridge? Or is it even okay to use it after a week? I really don’t wanna waste the stuff I made because I feel like this rosemary water is really helping! What are your thoughts on how to store rosemary water? Am I doing it wrong? Would love any tips or advice! Thanks a ton!!!

Doctors' responses

Storing rosemary water properly is key to maintaining its freshness and ensuring its efficacy. For the preparation that you have already made, if it’s developed an unusual smell, it might have begun to spoil and it’s best not to use it. Generally, homemade rosemary water can last up to a week in the fridge under ideal circumstances. If it’s beyond that time or if the smell or appearance is off, it’s likely better to discard it and make a fresh batch.

For storage, you’ve chosen glass, which is indeed preferable over plastic, due to its non-reactive properties. Plastic might degrade or react with essential oils over time. The fridge is indeed a good option for storing rosemary water as the cooler temperature can help prolong its shelf life. However, it’s also advisable to keep it in a dark-colored glass container if possible, as exposure to light can degrade its beneficial properties. If you can’t get a dark glass, storing it in a dark place or wrapping the bottle in foil can help shield it from light.

When making a fresh batch, ensure the rosemary is thoroughly washed and that all utensils and bottles are sterilized to lessen bacteria growth. Use filtered water to avoid contaminants, and after preparation, it can be stored in the fridge immediately. You can also consider freezing small portions that you can thaw as needed, which adds convenience and extends usability.

Next time for practical use, if you plan to utilize rosemary water within a week, it’s best to keep it in the fridge. For longer storage, freezing might be a good solution. As with any herbal preparation, always observe for any changes before application to ensure safety for use on your hair and other parts. If in doubt, making smaller batches more frequently can ensure freshness and effectiveness.

Rosemary water can indeed be a beneficial tonic for hair health, promoting growth, and providing shine when used regularly. Proper storage is important to maintain its efficacy and prevent spoilage, which you’ve rightly noted. Generally, for homemade concoctions like rosemary water, it’s best to store it in a cool, dark place, which often makes refrigeration a good choice. However, because of the moisture content, it’s prone to bacterial growth over time.

Typically, rosemary water should be used within a week to ten days, especially if it’s homemade, as it lacks preservatives. You mentioned a weird smell, which might indicate spoilage – it’s a sign it’s time to make a new batch. As for glass versus plastic, glass is generally preferable as it doesn’t leach chemicals and maintains purity and flavor better over time. Also, storing in a fridge is usually recommended, but be sure the rosemary water is airtight to prevent other odors from mingling with it.

Consider making smaller batches to reduce the likelihood of spoilage if you’re unable to use it up quickly. Additionally, adding a few drops of essential oils like tea tree or lavender to the mixture might extend its shelf life slightly due to their antimicrobial properties. However, be mindful as essential oils can be potent, so use sparingly.

Ultimately, trust your senses—if something seems off with the rosemary water, it’s safer to discard it and make a fresh batch. Remember, working with natural ingredients often demands more regular preparation, but the purity and benefits can quite outweigh the additional effort.
