Doctors' responses

For recurrent nosebleeds in Ayurveda, we consider factors like pitta dosha imbalance. Nosebleeds often indicate an increase in body heat or pitta. For acute management, guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) is beneficial. You can prepare guduchi juice by crushing the stem and taking about 10ml, once daily. Also, applying a mixture of sandalwood powder with rose water as a paste on the forehead or keeping cotton soaked in cold milk in the nostrils may help provide relief.

Dietary adjustments can significantly influence symptoms. Encourage a pitta-pacifying diet, which predominantly focuses on cool, soothing, and sweet foods. Include ample fruits like pomegranates, pears, and melons. Avoid excessively spicy, sour, or fermented foods. Hydration is crucial, but emphasize cool water or herbal teas such as coriander or fennel, which can help maintain a cooler body temperature internally.

Incorporate ghee (clarified butter) in his diet, as it is cooling and supports tissue regeneration. A teaspoon of ghee taken internally can assist in balancing pitta. Leafy greens like spinach, fenugreek, and gourds should be a regular part of meals, but ensure they are cooked, as raw can aggravate pitta.

Maintaining a consistent routine will help stabilize his natural body rhythms. Encourage him to wake early before sunrise; morning meditation or prayanama such as Sheetali breath can naturally cool the system. Regular sleep, avoiding daytime naps, and ensuring a relaxed bedtime are also crucial.

However, since nosebleeds have persisted for several years and have multiple events recently, I recommend visiting a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation. They can rule out any underlying conditions that may be causing or contributing to this issue. Safety should always be prioritized—if the bleeding is profuse or doesn’t stop, seek emergency medical attention.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
