is shikakai good for dandruff - #41716

Henry

I am dealing with this really annoying dandruff problem for a while now, and I heard people talking about shikakai. Like, does shikakai good for dandruff? I mean, I've tried all these shampoos and home remedies, but nothing seems to work long-term. Last week, a friend suggested I switch to shikakai and said it has amazing benefits for scalp health. But honestly, I’m a bit skeptical. My scalp gets super dry and itchy sometimes, like excuses my whole head is in disarray! I've noticed flakes everywhere, especially after wearing darker clothes, which is just embarrasing. I've been using tea tree oil, but it’s not really helping much. I wonder, does shikakai help not just with getting rid of the flakes but also in conditioning the hair too? Can anyone share their experiences? Is shikakai good for dandruff really, or is it just another trend? Any tips on how to use it effectively, like should I mix it with something? I am open to trying natural solutions but really hope to get rid of this dandruff soon! Any advice would be great!! Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Shikakai indeed can be beneficial for dandruff. In Ayurveda, Shikakai is renowned as a natural, gentle cleanser for the scalp that maintains its balance without stripping away natural oils. It has saponins, making it a mild cleanser, which is really helpful for flake removal while calming the itchy, dry scalp. Basically, by not disturbing the natural pH of the scalp, it aids in addressing the root causes of dandruff.

The drying and itching you mentioned often are signs of Vata imbalance or an aggravated Kapha dosha, both of which can manifest as dryness and excessive flakiness. Shikakai’s balancing nature is beneficial here. To use it, you can make a paste or use shikakai powder. Mix it with warm water to form a paste and apply it onto the scalp, massaging gently. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes before rinsing off thoroughly with lukewarm water.

For extra nourishing effects, combine shikakai with reetha (soapnut) and amla (Indian gooseberry) powders. This combination provides a synergy of cleaning and conditioning, leaving your hair not just dandruff-free but also soft and shiny. You can use this mix once or twice a week, making sure to be consistent for best results.

To address scalp dryness, consider applying warm sesame oil or coconut oil before washing. Leave the oil in your hair for an hour or so before applying the shikakai paste.

Alongside these remedies, ensure your diet is sattvic, nourishing, and keeps your doshas balanced. Incorporate hydrating foods and increase water intake, as dryness is often related to dehydration. Reduce intake of dry and processed foods which can aggravate Vata.

While shikakai is generally safe, do note how your scalp responds initially, especially if you have used commercial shampoos extensively in the past. If any irritation occurs, adjust usage, or consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for specific guidance tailored to your unique constitution.
