Dr RC BAMS MS
Hello I am able to understand your concern regarding chronic sinus infection with post-nasal drip and thick mucus, and especially if it lasts for 3–4 years, is an extremely uncomfortable and distressing situation.
When symptoms occur daily and are allergy-triggered, it is usually an indication that the problem has become chronic but still very much treatable with Ayurveda.
YOUR CONCERN (Summary)
-Chronic sinusitis - 3–4 years - Post-nasal drip - Severe, thick, sticky mucus in nostrils - Symptoms: Daily - Triggers: Dust, pollen (allergies) - Tried: Allopathic/prescription medicines
AYURVEDIC UNDERSTANDING
This problem is closely connected with: Dushta Pratishyaya / Jeerna Peenasa
With: Kapha predominance → thick, sticky mucus Ama accumulation → chronicity Vata involvement → dryness, obstruction, recurrence Blockage of Nasa–Shiras–Kantha srotas
👉 Prolonged Kapha becomes very dense and hard to dissolve, so tablets alone are not enough. It is necessary to administer local therapies (Nasya) + Kapha-pachana.
TREATMENT GOALS
1. Liquefy & expel thick mucus 2. Clear sinuses and post-nasal drip 3. Reduce allergy sensitivity 4. Prevent recurrence 5. Strengthen nasal & sinus mucosa
BEST AYURVEDIC TREATMENT PLAN
INTERNAL MEDICINE
1. Sitopaladi Churna ½ tsp twice daily with honey → Reduces Kapha, post-nasal drip, allergy cough
2. Trikatu Churna ¼ tsp twice daily after food with warm water → Breaks thick mucus, removes Ama
3. Vyoshadi Vati 1 tablet twice daily after food → Most effective for chronic sinus with sticky phlegm
4. Haridra Khanda 1 tsp at night with warm milk or water → Helps in allergy control, reduces hypersensitivity
⏳ Duration: 6–8 weeks, review needed
NASYA (MOST IMPORTANT – MUST DO) Anu Taila Nasya Dose: 2 drops in each nostril Time: Morning, on an empty stomach Duration: 21–30 days
– Liquefies and drains thick Kapha – Clears post-nasal drip – Reduces allergy recurrence
Do not perform this procedure when you have a fever, or during the period of active cold or severe congestion (restart when settled).
STEAM & LOCAL THERAPY Steam Inhalation (Daily) Hot water + ½ tsp ajwain OR pinch turmeric 8–10 minutes
–Softens thick mucus – Improves sinus drainage
DIETARY GUIDELINES (CRUCIAL)
✅ INCLUDE
Warm water throughout the day Ginger, black pepper, turmeric Moong dal, vegetable soups Garlic (if digestion permits)
❌ STRICTLY AVOID
Cold drinks, ice, refrigeration food Curd (especially at night) Banana, bakery items Excess sweets Milk + fruits combination
Diet control decides 50% of success in chronic sinusitis.
HOME REMEDIES (SUPPORTIVE
1.Warm Saline Gargles Once daily at night ✔ Helps post-nasal drip
2. Nasal Oil at Night 1 drop sesame oil or Anu Taila just inside the nostrils ✔ Prevents dryness & recurrence
3.Turmeric + Ginger Water Once daily ✔ Anti-inflammatory & Kapha-reducing
YOGA & BREATHING
Bhramari Pranayama – 5–7 rounds daily In case of severe sinus blockage, do not practice forceful Kapalbhati
IMPORTANT NOTE As it is chronic (3–4 years):
Treatment has to be consistent Seasonal Nasya (twice yearly) is recommended Don’t use antibiotics & nasal sprays frequently, long-term
Even long-standing sinusitis with thick mucus can be controlled and significantly improved with Ayurveda, especially when Nasya + diet discipline are followed properly.
Warm regards, Dr Snehal Vidhate
