Hi! I’m an assistant to the Ask Ayurveda doctors. I’ve carefully reviewed your question.

I will explain your symptoms through the Ayurvedic perspective so you understand what is happening in your body as a whole.

Osteoarthritis is often linked with an imbalance in Vata dosha, which governs movement and is associated with qualities like dryness and irregularity. When Vata is aggravated, it can lead to joint pain, stiffness, and degeneration of tissues, as seen in osteoarthritis. The lack of relief from Dhanvandhari tailam or Kaitamchukkadi tail suggests that the current treatment may not be adequately pacifying the aggravated Vata or addressing the deeper imbalance.

In Ayurveda, pain and stiffness are viewed as signs of Vata’s cold and dry qualities affecting the joints. This can be exacerbated by lifestyle factors such as irregular eating habits, stress, and insufficient rest, which further disturb Vata. Additionally, if digestion is weak, it can lead to the accumulation of ama (toxins), which can settle in the joints and worsen symptoms.

To give doctors a precise and effective treatment plan, your answers to the questions below are essential. Without this information, the recommendations will be more general and less accurate.

Please answer each question as clearly as possible.

1. How long have you been experiencing osteoarthritis symptoms? (Choose from: Less than 1 month, 1-6 months, 6 months to 1 year, More than 1 year) 2. How would you rate the severity of your pain? (Options: Mild, Moderate, Severe, Very severe) 3. What specific joints are affected by osteoarthritis? (Options: Knees, Hips, Hands, Spine, Multiple joints) 4. Have you noticed any particular activities that worsen your pain? (Options: Walking, Climbing stairs, Sitting, No specific activities) 5. How is your overall energy level during the day? (Options: High, Moderate, Low, Very low) 6. Have you tried any other treatments or therapies apart from tailam? (Options: No, Physical therapy, Over-the-counter pain relief, Prescription medication) 7. How is your digestive health? (Options: Good, Occasional issues, Frequent digestive problems, Chronic issues)

Your detailed responses will help in understanding the specific nature of your condition and tailor a more effective Ayurvedic approach.

Both thailam can be used for vata rogas. If you didn’t get relief means you should take take some internal medicines for vata anulomana. 1. Amruthothatam kashayam for 1 week - 15ml + 45 ml lukewarm water twice daily half an hour before food. This will help to relieve inflammatory conditions if any. 2. Kottamchukkadi tailam + kethaki mooladi tailam is very much effective in OA. First double boil the tailam and apply over the knee area and massage for 10-15 minutes minimum and then hot water compress with a cotton cloth. 3. Sallaki tab 1-0-1 after food if pain is severe. 4. Yogaraja guggulu 1-0-1 before food for 1 month. Do some knee strengthening exercises. Take care, Dr. Shaniba

In Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is described as Sandhigata Vata. It is a chronic condition that develops gradually due to the wear and degeneration of cartilage that cushions the ends of bones. Clinically, it presents with joint pain, stiffness, mild swelling, and reduced range of movement. From an Ayurvedic perspective, osteoarthritis primarily arises from an imbalance of Vata dosha, along with depletion of Shleshaka Kapha (the lubricating component comparable to synovial fluid). Contributing factors such as aging, excess body weight, improper diet, stress, and unhealthy lifestyle habits aggravate Vata. This aggravated Vata localizes in the joints, leading to dryness (rukshata), stiffness, crepitus, and pain. Taking ayurvedic treatment will help you in managing the symptoms and improve the quality of life. As you asked not just application of tailam won’t give you good response. Here is your prescription and do follow this if you can Internal medicines 1. Rasnerandadi kashayam - 15 ml + 45 ml lukewarm water, 1/2 hr before food twice daily 2. Yogaraja Guggulu 1-0-1 after food 3. Sahacharadi 21 avarti - 5 drops with kashayam External application 1. Kottamchukkadi tailam + Sahacharadi tailam - Apply on knee and keep for about 1 hour. This is the way you can simply apply it else make a gauze pad with cotton and soak it with taila and keep over knees Note - If you have swelling on your knees do it as a dhara by just double boiling taila. Do this for 2 weeks and do follow up. If you are having any difficulty in understanding kindly contact me. Thank you.

In osteoarthritis (sandhivata), only oil selection is usually not enough—the stage of disease matters more. Choose oil based on symptom If dryness, cracking, stiffness > pain → use dhanvantaram tailam If pain + heaviness + stiffness → use kottamchukkadi tailam Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition-only oil application won’t reverse it Since symptoms are >1 year and moderate, your relative needs a combined approach (internal + external + therapy). If you want, I can design a complete treatment plan (medicines + diet + therapy) specifically for your condition and age—so you can finally get relief instead of trial-and-error with oils.
