It sounds like you’re feeling quite stressed about your weight, and it’s understandable when it’s affecting your knees already. In Ayurveda, we need to consider your prakriti (constitution), dosha imbalances, and agni (digestive fire) to get to the bottom of this. Since it seems the weight gain began several years ago, there might be an underlying imbalance we need to address to support natural weight loss.
First, with your measurements, it seems that there might be a kapha imbalance, which can lead to weight gain. Kapha dosha, when in excess, tends to accumulate, resulting in weight issues. The key here is to stimulate your agni and balance Kapha with lifestyle and dietary changes.
Start your day with a cup of warm water with lemon juice and a pinch of ginger. This combination gently awakens the digestive fire. Follow this with some yoga or brisk walking for about 30 minutes. Engage in exercises that sweat out excess kapha, but ensure it doesn’t hurt your knees. Swimming can be a good retreat for your joints while providing excellent exercise.
Eat light meals, favoring warm, cooked foods that are easily digestible over raw or cold foods. Enjoy spicy, bitter, and astringent foods like leafy greens, spices like turmeric, black pepper, and fenugreek. Avoid heavy, oily, and sugary foods, and try not to snack between meals.
It’s advisable to eat your biggest meal at lunchtime, when the digestive fire is strongest, and opt for a lighter dinner. Try a simple khichdi or vegetable soup at night. Drink warm herbal teas, especially those made from ginger, cinnamon, or fennel. These help to kindle digestion and remove kapha build-up.
Stay away from daytime naps as they worsen kapha. Instead, focus on maintaining regular sleep cycles, aiming for 7-8 hours at night for optimal rest. Consider a meditation practice – believe it or not, stress reduction can directly influence weight loss, probably more than we give it credit!
If pain in your knees persists or worsens, make sure you consult with healthcare professional who can provide immediate relief and assess if specific needs arise. Take care, and remember that small consistent changes can make a big difference over time.
