what is kuttu - #23754

Henry

I am really confused and need some help here. I recently started looking into dietary changes 'cause I've been feeling sluggish and my digestion has been off for a while. A friend mentioned kuttu at a gathering the other day and I kinda brushed it off. But now I'm seeing it everywhere! So I gotta know, what is kuttu exactly? Like, is it just another name for buckwheat? I read somewhere that it's gluten free, which sounds great for me since I tend to react a bit to gluten. Last week, I tried a kuttu dosa and it was super delicious, but I still don't fully understand how to incorporate it into my meals. Do I just use it like other flours? And, can kuttu help with bloating or anything like that? I really want to make the most of this but honestly, I feel kinda lost. Any tips on what is kuttu and how I can use it would be a lifesaver! Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Kuttu, known as buckwheat in English, is indeed considered a gluten-free grain. It’s not actually a grain but a seed, making it a great alternative for those with gluten sensitivities. In Ayurveda, kuttu is valued for its ability to strengthen the digestive fire (agni) – something you mentioned having issues with. Incorporating kuttu in your diet can help balance your digestive system, potentially reducing bloating as it’s light to digest and can aid in managing sluggishness.

To utilize kuttu in your meals, you can indeed use its flour much like you would other flours, but keep in mind it’s a bit stickier due to its high starch content. It can be used for making dosas, rotis, or even pancakes and you might have seen kuttu parathas or pakoras too. When cooking it, you may want to combine it with other flours for certain recipes if texture becomes an issue, but as you enjoyed kuttu dosa, it seems fine for you.

For your digestive concerns, try incorporating kuttu dishes during meal times when your agni is strongest, like lunch. You might also want to consume it with warming spices like cumin, coriander, or ginger which further enhance digestibility. Pair it with vegetables that are easy to digest, and avoid combining it with too many other heavy foods.

Listening to your body is crucial, so if kuttu suits you, enjoy it as part of balanced meals. It pairs well with legumes for a complete protein or can stand alone in dishes you like. As you familiarize yourself more, you’ll find the best ways it works for your diet and helps in digestion. Remember, Ayurvedic diet advice is personalized, so these are just guidelines to start with. Do monitor how your body responds and tweak as necessary. And if ever symptoms worsen or persist, consulting with a healthcare professional is always a safe move.
