which medicine is best for nervous system - #44321

Chloe

I am really struggling with some weird, like, nerve issues lately. My hands and feet feel tingly and sometimes even numb. I’ve had this for a few months now, and it’s driving me crazy. I’ve tried maybe a bunch of different treatments, but nothing seems to work. A friend suggested I check out Ayurveda, and I’m wondering which medicine is best for nervous system health? I did some basic stuff like taking over-the-counter pain relievers, but they don't really help the nerve symptoms. Occasionally, I feel like it gets worse when I'm super stressed, especially at work—lots of deadlines and pressures, ugh, right?! Also been feeling kinda more anxious than usual. Do you think a specific Ayurvedic herb or treatment might help? I’ve heard about ashwagandha and some others, but I'm not sure what’s really the best! How would I know which medicine is best for nervous system recovery? Is there something specific I should look for in remedies? I’m just wanting to get some relief and chill out a bit. Would love any advice you could share, thanks!

Doctors' responses

For issues like tingling and numbness, Ayurveda might indeed offer some support, especially if stress is making things worse. Your symptoms could be reflecting a Vata imbalance, as Vata governs movement and the nervous system in Ayurveda. To support your nervous system, the focus would be on grounding and nourishing your nervous tissues.

Ashwagandha, as you mentioned, is one of the most revered herbs in Ayurveda for calming the nervous system and can be beneficial. It’s known for its adaptogenic properties, helping the body manage stress. You might take it in powdered form with warm milk or water, ideally in the evening, as it also promotes restful sleep.

But Ashwagandha isn’t the only herb that can help. Brahmi is another classical herb, known for its ability to enhance cognitive function and soothe the nerves. Brahmi can be taken in capsule form or used in a Brahmi tea; regular consumption supports mental clarity and tranquility.

Lifestyle adjustments, such as ensuring a regular sleep pattern and incorporating practices such as yoga or pranayama, are essential. Simple breathing exercises can significantly reduce stress. Practicing Abhyanga, which is self-massage with warm sesame or almond oil, can also be quite beneficial. It helps to calm Vata dosha and supports the nervous system.

In terms of diet, focus on Vata-pacifying foods—warm, well-cooked, lightly spiced meals with healthy fats like ghee, and sweet fruits like bananas. Avoid stimulants such as coffee, and aim for warm herbal teas instead, like ginger tea.

Still, since you’ve been experiencing these symptoms for months, I urge you to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can assess your condition in detail. There might be underlying issues requiring professional evaluation. Well-designed Ayurvedic treatments are quite individual, considering not just symptoms but your unique constitution and lifestyle, ensuring comprehensive care.
