how to make kadha for cough - #44472

Henry

I am really struggling with this persistent cough that just won't go away! I've tried a bunch of over-the-counter stuff, but nothing seems to work. My grandma used to say that she always made this homemade drink called kadha for cough, and it really helped her, but she never showed me how to make it. I feel like I need to give it a shot now, especially with this nagging cough that keeps waking me up at night. I remember her saying something about spices and herbs, and I think she added ginger and maybe some black pepper? I don’t know! I’ve googled how to make kadha for cough, but a lot of recipes seem different. Some say to boil water first, others say to steep the herbs. Ugh! It’s confusing 😩. Can someone give me a simple recipe for how to make kadha for cough that won’t take hours? Also, how do I know if I'm using the right ingredients? I've got turmeric and cinnamon at home, but I’m not sure if they’re the right ones. And how much of each spice do I need for it to actually work? Would love any tips since I really want to try this kadha instead of just relying on all these drugs. Thanks a lot!

To make an effective kadha for cough, let’s focus on some key ingredients that balance kapha dosha which is often associated with respiratory issues like cough. You indeed recall correctly—ginger and black pepper are essential. Here’s a straightforward recipe you can try:

Begin by boiling 2 cups of water in a saucepan. To this, add a half-inch piece of fresh ginger, finely grated or thinly sliced. Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory properties which can help soothe throat irritation. Next, add 3 to 4 black peppercorns which you can lightly crush to release their potent oils. Black pepper acts as a natural decongestant.

Now, include a quarter teaspoon of turmeric powder — known for its curcumin content, turmeric helps boost immunity and fight infections. You’ve mentioned cinnamon, which is good—add a small stick or half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder for its warming properties that help in soothing a sore throat.

Alternatively, throw in a few holy basil leaves, if available—they can help clear respiratory passages. If you’re including these, around 7-8 leaves will suffice. Sweeten your kadha with a spoonful of honey if desired, but do this after removing it from heat since honey loses its beneficial properties when cooked.

Boil the mixture on medium heat until it reduces by half, approximately 10-15 minutes. Strain the liquid into a cup, and sip the kadha while it’s warm. It’s best to drink this twice a day, once in the morning and another cup in the evening.

Remember, while kadha can alleviate symptoms, persistent coughs, especially if chronic, may need further medical evaluation. Drink warm water throughout the day, avoid cold foods, and maintain adequate hydration. If symptoms persist, consider consulting a healthcare professional to ensure there’s no underlying condition needing intervention.
