Managing ankylosing spondylitis, especially as it progresses, calls for a well-rounded strategy. A primary aspect in Ayurveda is balancing the doshas, and for AS, the vata dosha often requires focus. Warming, anti-inflammatory herbs like Ashwagandha and Ginger can support you in reducing vata aggravation. Take 500 mg of Ashwagandha powder with warm water twice a day, preferably after meals, to enhance joint flexibility. For digestion, Trikatu churna (a combination of ginger, black pepper, and long pepper) is beneficial; half a teaspoon with honey before meals may help stimulate agni, your digestive fire.

Dietary-wise, warm, cooked, and nourishing foods soothe vata—think khichdi, soups, and lentils. Avoid cold, raw, or dry foods that may further disturb digestion. Consuming a teaspoon of ghee daily can also be soothing. Regular, gentle exercises such as yoga focusing on spinal mobility and breathing practices can support maintaining flexibility, consider poses like cat-cow or gentle twists. Keep movements slow and mindful to avoid strain.

Abdominal pain and poor digestion might arise from imbalanced pita or low digestive fire. Eating smaller meals more frequently and drinking ginger tea can aid digestion. It’s crucial to maintain regularity without overexertion since AS can make the spine rigid.

Incorporating stress management practices like meditation, or pranayama can also support both vata and pitta balance. Whenever symptoms worsen or pain becomes unmanageable, consulting with an orthopedic specialist is essential—they can provide further evaluation and adjust treatment as needed. In severe cases, integration with conventional treatments ensures broadest support.
