How to treat upper thoracic arthritis and stenosis with Ayurvedic therapies for inflammation at age 74? - #55442
I’ve been relatively healthy and strong most of my life, but I’ve had some issues with scoliosis in my back that I’ve managed. Now that I’m 74 I do have an upper thoracic arthritis issue. It Didn’t really bother me till around two years ago. The condition started becoming chronic. X-ray shows that I have stenosis in my back and specifically in my upper thoracic. I am managing it right now with exercise and qi gong. I would like to incorporate our vedic therapies to minimize the inflammation. I eat pretty clean. Not perfect but lots of greens and some grain

From an Ayurvedic perspective, your condition reflects a combination of Vata aggravation (degeneration, dryness, stiffness, scoliosis) along with localized inflammation affecting the spinal joints and nerves. The fact that you remain active with exercise and qi gong is excellent and already supports healthy circulation and mobility. Ayurveda can complement this beautifully by helping reduce inflammation, nourish tissues, and calm the nervous system naturally. Ayurvedic Approach for Thoracic Arthritis & Stenosis 1. Vata-Calming & Anti-Inflammatory Diet Continue your clean diet, but at this stage of life Ayurveda generally recommends: More warm, cooked, easy-to-digest foods Healthy fats like ghee, sesame oil, olive oil Soups, stews, cooked greens, turmeric, ginger, cumin Avoid excessive dry foods, cold foods, and skipping meals Too many raw greens can sometimes increase dryness and Vata in older age, so balance them with warm cooked meals. 2. Helpful Ayurvedic Herbs Common Ayurvedic herbs used for joint inflammation and spinal degeneration include: Ashwagandha – supports strength, nerves, and recovery Shallaki (Boswellia) – traditionally used for inflammation and stiffness Guggulu formulations such as Yograj Guggulu or Mahayograj Guggulu Turmeric with black pepper for inflammatory support Dashmool preparations for Vata-related pain 3. External Ayurvedic Therapies These therapies are often very beneficial in chronic spinal stiffness and arthritis: Abhyanga (warm medicated oil massage) Helps lubricate tissues, calm Vata, and reduce stiffness. Kati/Prishtha Basti Warm herbal oil pooling therapy over the spine/back region. Swedana (herbal steam/fomentation) Helps loosen tight muscles and improve circulation. Shirodhara Particularly helpful if stress worsens symptoms, as emotional strain strongly aggravates Vata. 4. Lifestyle Support Continue qi gong and gentle mobility work Avoid heavy lifting and sudden twisting movements Prioritize restorative sleep and stress reduction Gentle pranayama and meditation may help calm the nervous system and reduce pain sensitivity 5. Important Guidance Thoracic stenosis should be monitored carefully. Seek medical attention promptly if you develop: Numbness or weakness Balance changes Loss of coordination Bowel or bladder symptoms Ayurveda works best here as a supportive and restorative system alongside your current medical care and exercise routine. With consistent Vata-balancing therapies, many people experience improved flexibility, reduced stiffness, calmer inflammation, and better overall quality of life naturally.

Thank you. I appreciate the recommendations. blessings

You are already doing the right things with daily exercise and qigong. In Ayurveda, this condition is mainly due to Vata aggravation in bones/joints, so treatment should focus on warmth, lubrication, gentle strengthening, anti-inflammatory diet, and stress regulation. ----Rx — Internal Medicine 1) Tab.
