I have a problem with my back. I was in the mountain part last week and did a painful jump. Now my back hurts when I move.

When experiencing back pain after a physical activity like jumping in the mountains, it might indicate a strain or mild injury. From an Ayurvedic perspective, it is crucial to address both the external symptoms and the underlying imbalances in doshas. This kind of pain typically involves an aggravation of Vata dosha, which rules movement and should be pacified.

Firstly, applying warm sesame oil to the affected area might provide some relief. Sesame oil is regarded in Ayurveda for its warming and nourishing properties. Gently massage the oil onto your back for 5-10 minutes, two times a day, to soothe strained muscles. The warmth from the oil can calm the Vata and promote circulation, assisting in healing.

Further, try consuming a diet that is high in anti-inflammatory foods to reduce any swelling or discomfort. Fresh ginger tea is beneficial here—boil sliced ginger in water and drink it 2-3 times daily. Ginger is known for its inflammation-reducing properties and can help with swelling and stiffness.

Ensure to get adequate rest, avoid any strenuous activities that might exacerbate the issue, and engage in gentle stretches to maintain flexibility. Pavanamuktasana or wind-relieving pose is a simple yoga practice that can relieve tension in the back, perform it gently to avoid any strain.

For internal balance, consider taking a Vata-pacifying herbal remedy like ashwagandha, which is known for its rejuvenating qualities. You can consume it as a powder mixed with warm milk before bed, which can promote relaxation and support your back’s recovery process.

Be attentive to your body’s signals; if the pain persists or intensifies, it’s prudent to seek a healthcare professional’s evaluation. Sometime physical interventions may be required if there’s serious injury. Never overlook severe or ongoing pain, as it could suggest a more serious condition that needs urgent attention.
