The intense pain you’re experiencing in the thoracic and lumbar spine, particularly the sharp shooting pain during movement, suggests an imbalance of Vata dosha, which governs the nervous system and movement in the body. This imbalance can lead to dryness, stiffness, and discomfort in the joints and muscles. Ayurveda recommends both internal and external treatments to help pacify Vata, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the spine and surrounding muscles.

For immediate relief, warm oil massage using Mahanarayan Taila or Dhanvantaram Taila is beneficial. Gently massaging these oils into the lower back and following with a warm compress can help improve circulation, relieve stiffness, and alleviate pain. Ayurvedic therapies like Kati Basti (a warm oil retention treatment for the lower back) or Pizhichil (a warm oil pouring therapy) are highly effective for deeper relief and balancing Vata.

Internally, herbal supplements such as Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shallaki (Boswellia serrata), and Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) are beneficial. Additionally, adopting a Vata-pacifying diet—warm, nourishing foods with ghee and healthy oils—can provide lubrication to the joints, reducing stiffness and discomfort.

Gentle yoga postures, such as Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) and Marjariasana (Cat-Cow Stretch), may further relieve tension in the spine, improving flexibility and stability over time. Avoid heavy lifting, cold environments, and sudden movements, as they can aggravate Vata.

Muscle spasms and pain, especially when it pops up in various spots like you’re mentioning, can be a real annoying! And I get that anxiety and weight gain tied to it can just make things spin more. Let’s talk about potential reasons from an Ayurvedic view and ways to soothe these concerns.

Firstly, with muscle spasms and pain, it might be your Vata dosha playing up. It’s known for creating instability and tension in the body. And the fact you’ve mentioned anxiety too — that’s typically Vata doing its mischief. You might find relief just by grounding and calming Vata. Warming foods and drinks—think warm soups, cooked veggies, warm herbal teas—can be soothing. Favor sweet, sour, and salty tastes—foods like ripe bananas, avocados, or adding a dash of lemon or rock salt to your meals could work.

On weight gain, it can sometimes also be a Kapha imbalance. If that’s the case, you’d wanna introduce some spice into your life. Not metaphorically, though that can be fun, too. I mean, literally, spices! Ginger, turmeric, and black pepper could gently ignite your digestive fire, Agni, helping with metabolism.
