how to prevent conjunctivitis - #37504

Avery

I am dealing with this annoying issue lately, and I’m really worried about what to do. A couple weeks ago, my eyes started to feel super itchy and red, and then boom! I went to the doc and got diagnosed with conjunctivitis. The drops they gave me helped a little, but honestly, I don’t want to go through that again. Like, it was kind of miserable! I’m not really sure how I got it in the first place. I think I might’ve touched my face after not washing my hands, which is a big habit of mine. I keep hearing about hygiene and prevention, but how to prevent conjunctivitis feels a bit unclear. I mean, do I need to totally change my routine? I never used to think about washing my hands that much! I’ve read about using clean towels and avoiding touching my face, but it feels like there’s gotta be more to it, right? What about stuff like removing my makeup or how often I should change pillowcases? I still have some of those itchy feelings joining me in my life and I really need a way to kick it to the curb and just avoid this whole situation in the future. What should I specifically keep an eye out for, or what precautions could I take daily on how to prevent conjunctivitis? Any tips? Thanks!

Preventing conjunctivitis involves paying attention to both hygiene and lifestyle habits. Cleanliness is indeed a big part but Ayurveda also offers some holistic approaches that might help maintain eye health. You’re on the right track considering hand hygiene. Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially before touching your face or eyes. It might sound repetitive, but it’s a cornerstone practice.

Changing pillowcases at least once a week is crucial. They can harbor bacteria and allergens that contribute to eye irritation. When it comes to makeup, always remove it before bed — use natural oil like coconut or almond instead of chemical removers; they’re gentler on eyes. Eye make-up should not be shared and tools like brushes or applicators should be kept clean as well.

Diet also plays a role in prevention. Include cooling foods that balance Pitta dosha, which is linked to inflammation. Foods like cucumber, watermelon, and coriander leaves are great. Avoid excessively spicy, oily, or processed foods as they can exacerbate issues.

Also, practice Trataka, a yogic eye exercise that involves concentrating on a flame or point to strengthen and cleanse the eyes. However, do not do this if eyes are already irritated. Gentle eye rinsing with Triphala water can help maintain ocular health; boil Triphala powder in water, strain, and use the cooled liquid.

Ensure adequate rest for your eyes, especially if you’re working on screens for prolonged periods. Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Keep the immunity steong, as it helps in tackling infections more efficiently. This includes maintaining a balanced lifestyle, with regular exercise and stress management techniques like meditation.

Remember that if symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional as Ayurveda would complement conventional treatment, not entirely replace it.
