Doctors' responses

Dry and painful eyes after cancer treatment can be distressing and requires a comprehensive approach to provide relief. From an Ayurvedic perspective, the imbalance may relate to Vata and Pitta doshas. Their excess can lead to drying of tissues and inflammation causing dryness and pain.

Firstly, Triphala eye wash could be beneficial. At night, soak a teaspoon of Triphala powder in water and strain it in the morning. Use the liquid as an eye wash. It has properties that clean and soothe eyes due to its anti-inflammatory and cooling nature. Also, applying Ayurvedic medicated ghee, such as Triphala Ghee, near the eyes could relieve dryness. Lightly massage around the eyes before sleep.

Increase your intake of hydrating foods and herbs. Aloe Vera juice, Amla, or Guduchi can be pretty effective; these are cooling herbs to balance Pitta dosha. You can consume these in juice or in powder form with a cup of water on an empty stomach. Stay hydrated by drinking warm water throughout the day and include juicy fruits like cucumbers and pomegranates in your diet.

Incorporate lifestyle changes that pacify Vata. Practice regular routines with early bedtimes, stress management techniques like yoga or meditation, and incorporate pranayama, specifically sheetali pranayama, to cool the body. Limit exposure to direct sunlight, wind and screen time.

Consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner is recommended, as personalized treatment may be necessary, particularly if symptoms persist. If severe pain or vision changes occur, seek immediate allopathic medical assessment to prevent potential complications, as these could be signs of more serious conditions needing urgent treatment.
