Doctors' responses

Once your cough has resolved, you can generally resume milk consumption, provided it’s in moderation. According to Ayurvedic principles, milk is considered a sattvic food that nourishes the body and calming for the mind. However, it’s important to consider your dosha or body constitution, as well as the season and your digestive strength, or agni.

If you frequently experience respiratory issues, you might belong to the Kapha dosha, where excess mucus production is common. In such cases, excessive consumption of milk and dairy might aggravate mucus formation. But completely eliminating dairy isn’t always necessary. It’s about balance, you can include milk that has been boiled with spices like ginger or turmeric, as these help reduce Kapha and aid digestion.

For Vata or Pitta constitutions, milk is generally more supportive, offering grounding and cooling properties respectively. Yet, it’s essential to consume milk when you have a good digestion, or else it might lead to ama (toxins) accumulation in the body. Always opt for warm or room temperature milk instead of cold to help digestion.

Pay attention to the season too. In colder months, milk boiled with warming spices can be supportive, but in summer, you might limit its intake if it feels too heavy or cooling. If you notice any recurrence of congestion or mucus build-up, it might be wise to reduce or pause dairy intake again.

It’s crucial to listen to your body and observe how it reacts. If unsure or if symptoms persist, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner can help tailor advice to suit your unique constitution and health concerns.
