is curd good for sore throat - #44789

Grayson

I am really struggling with a sore throat for the past few days. At first, it was just this annoying scratchy feeling, but now it feels like I've swallowed a bunch of knives! Ugh! Anyway, I've heard so many mixed things about what to eat and drink while I'm dealing with this. Some friends say I should avoid dairy because it could make it worse, but then I read somewhere that curd could actually help soothe it, you know? It got me thinking, is curd good for sore throat? Like, can eating curd really help with the irritation? I mean, I usually love having it with my meals, but with this throat situation, I'm not sure if it's worth it right now. Also, I’ve been sipping warm ginger tea, but what other natural remedies can complement it? I want to feel better ASAP! Has anyone tried curd while suffering from a sore throat? Did it help? Is it just an old wives' tale or are there some truths to it? I could really use any advice you all have right now!

Doctors' responses

Curd, or yogurt, can be both beneficial and problematic when dealing with a sore throat, depends on your specific condition and constitution. In Ayurveda, sore throat could be due to an imbalance of the kapha and vata doshas, and the moist, cooling nature of curd can potentially aggravate or pacify these doshas. If your sore throat feels due to cold and congestion, dairy could increase mucus production and should be limited, especially if taken at night.

However, if there’s an inflammatory element with burning and dryness, a small amount of fresh homemade curd, consumed at room temperature and during the daytime, might offer some soothing relief. Its probiotics can help support digestion and boost immunity, which can be supportive to your system. Consider adding a pinch of black pepper or roasted cumin to your curd to balance its cooling tendencies.

Additionally, warm ginger tea is a great ally for a sore throat, as ginger is excellent for boosting agni (digestive fire) and helping balance kapha by clearing respiratory passages. You might also try a honey and turmeric paste—a powerful blend for soothing irritation and supporting immunity. Simply mix a teaspoon of turmeric powder with honey and take a tiny spoonful, letting it slowly melt in your mouth.

Steam inhalation with eucalyptus oil or tulsi leaves can also provide relief. Just ensure you’re drinking enough warm fluids and that your diet includes light, easily digestible foods—like soups and cooked vegetables. Avoid fried and excessively spicy foods, as they increase inflammation. Finally, if your sore throat persists or is severe, I suggest renting to a healthcare professional.
