Cataracts are a common condition in older age, where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, potentially affecting vision. While surgery is often recommended for more significant impairment, Ayurveda offers supportive approaches that may help in the early stages. It’s important to note that these methods won’t entirely reverse cataracts, but they might slow progression or help maintain overall eye health.

The traditional Ayurvedic approach emphasizes balancing the doshas, notably Kapha dosha, which tends to be involved in conditions featuring excess accumulation, like cataracts. The following recommendations are based on classical Ayurvedic texts and current practice:

1. Triphala Ghrita has been suggested as useful for maintaining eye health. You might consider taking half a teaspoon of Triphala Ghrita with warm water on an empty stomach in the morning. This helps to purify and nourish the eyes.

2. Consume Ayurvedic eye drops as Anjana, such as the ones containing natural ingredients like Punarnava or Triphala. However, it’s crucial to consult an Ayurvedic physician to get a preparation specifically suited to your constitution and ensure compatibility with your health profile.

3. Dietary adjustments can support eye health. Including green leafy vegetables, carrots, beetroots, and maintaining a diet rich in antioxidants can be supportive. Avoid heavy, oily, and spicy foods that aggravate Kapha and Pitta doshas.

4. Netra Shuddhi, or eye cleansing with Triphala-infused water, can also promote eye health. Boil water with Triphala powder, let it cool and strain it. Use this decoction to gently cleanse the eyes once a day.

5. Daily practice of Tratak kriya—focusing on a point, such as a candle flame—works as an exercise that may enhance focus and eyesight.

6. Regular yoga and pranayama can ensure proper circulation and energy flow, benefiting overall body health and eye function. Poses like Sarvangasana and exercises like Surya Namaskar can be particularly beneficial.

These methods are supportive and should not replace professional medical evaluation or treatment. Remember, regular eye check-ups are essential for monitoring the progression of cataracts. In any case, it’s wise to engage with an experienced practitioner for personalized, precise treatment. If vision impaires, seeking an ophthalmologist’s advice is essential.
