In Ayurveda, the connection between Bruxism (teeth grinding) and Dantaharsha (dentin hypersensitivity/tingling) is rooted in the aggravation of Vata Dosha within the Majja Dhatu (nervous system/bone marrow) and Asthi Dhatu (bone tissue). Here is the clinical correlation between these two conditions: 1. The Pathophysiological Link In Ayurvedic classics, teeth are considered the Upadhatu (secondary tissue) of Asthi Dhatu. When Vata becomes imbalanced, it creates dryness and friction, leading to these two conditions appearing as a sequence: • Bruxism (Vata-dominant Jaw Disorder): Excessive grinding is often a result of Chala (movement) and Ruksha (dry) qualities of Vata affecting the jaw nerves and muscles. • Dantaharsha (The Result): The literal meaning of Dantaharsha is “teeth that are thrilled or pained by touch.” Chronic grinding (Bruxism) wears down the enamel (Dantavalkala), exposing the sensitive layers and leading to the symptoms of Dantaharsha. 2. Common Causes (Nidana) Ayurveda identifies several overlapping causes for both: • Vata-Aggravating Diet: Excessive consumption of dry, cold, or astringent foods. • Manasika Shrama (Mental Stress): High levels of Rajas (activity/anxiety) in the mind manifest as physical tension in the jaw during sleep. • Dantacharyas (Poor Dental Habits): Using excessively hard toothbrushes or chewing on hard objects. 3. Symptoms of Dantaharsha When Bruxism leads to Dantaharsha, you will typically experience: • Sheetasahatva: Inability to tolerate cold items. • Ushnasahatva: Sensitivity to heat. • Vayu-Sparsha-Asahatva: Pain even when cold air touches the teeth. • Dantachalana: In advanced cases, a feeling of slight looseness or weakness in the gums. 4. Ayurvedic Management Strategy To break the connection between the two, treatment focuses on calming Vata and strengthening the dental tissues. Internal Treatment • Asthi-Poshaka Herbs: Ingredients like Ashwagandha, Laksha, and Guggulu help strengthen the bone and tooth structure. • Vata-Shamaka: Herbs like Brahmi or Jatamansi are often used if the Bruxism is driven by underlying stress or sleep disturbances. External/Local Therapy (Kriya Kalpa) • Gandusha (Oil Pulling): This is the gold standard for Dantaharsha. Using warm Irimedadi Taila or Arimedadi Thailam strengthens the enamel and calms the nerves. • Kavala (Gargling): Rinsing with warm milk or a decoction of Dashmoola helps reduce the sensitivity. • Pratisarana (Gingival Massage): Gently massaging the gums with a mixture of Sesame oil and a pinch of Saindhava Lavana (rock salt) to improve circulation. 5. Preventive Tips • Abhyanga: Massaging the head and jaw area with warm Maha Narayan Taila before sleep to relax the masseter muscles. • Soft Diet: Shifting to Snigdha (unctuous) and warm foods to pacify Vata. • Mouth Guard: While not a traditional Ayurvedic tool, using a night guard is often recommended alongside Ayurvedic oils to prevent further mechanical wear of the teeth.
