My father has been in the hospital for the past week, and his condition worsened to the point where they had to put him on a ventilator to help him breathe. The doctors explained that a ventilator is a machine used to assist or replace spontaneous breathing when someone is unable to breathe on their own due to illness, injury, or surgery. While the medical staff is doing everything they can, I’m wondering how I can support his respiratory health naturally and help him recover. I’ve heard that Ayurveda offers remedies for improving lung and respiratory health. Are there any Ayurvedic herbs or treatments that can help strengthen the lungs, improve breathing, and support the recovery of someone who has been on a ventilator? I’ve read that herbs like Pippali, Licorice, and Tulsi are known for their ability to support respiratory health—could these herbs help in my father’s case? While medical intervention’s crucial, Ayurveda offers ways to support respiratory health that could be beneficial alongside medical care.

Regarding herbs, what you heard about Pippali and Licorice is spot on. Pippali (long pepper) is known for its ability to enhance lung capacity and even boost the overall respiratory system. You could consider creating a simple mixture of 1/2 tsp Pippali powder and honey, giving it daily. But be careful if he has significant pitta dosha imbalance, 'cause it could be aggravating in excess.

Licorice acts as a soothing agent for the throat and lungs and might help reduce mucus buildup too. A decoction made from Licorice root can be effective. To make it, boil a small piece in water and let him sip it warm. But make sure with his doctors – interactions with his ongoing medication need consideration. Tulsi is amazing too! Just boil a few leaves in water or prepare Tulsi tea; it helps in clearing respiratory congestion.

Now, about diet – yes, focus on foods easy to digest is crucial. Think warm, well-cooked meals. Moong dal khichdi works wonders, maintaining digestive health without burdening the body.
