I am really confused about whether curd causes cold or not. Like, I've always heard that eating curd during winter can make you catch a cold. My aunt is super strict about it and says I should avoid curd in colder months. But then, last week I had this bad cold, and strangely I had eaten curd the day before. I mean, I usually love having yogurt, like daily, especially in my smoothies or with rice. But, now I'm scared that I might be making my cold worse by eating curd? My friend says that's just an old wives' tale, but then what do I believe? Is there some kind of truth behind this whole does curd cause cold thing? I read a bit online, but honestly, the info is so mixed. Some say it’s fine, others swear it leads to respiratory issues. Frustrating! How to balance enjoying my food and not getting sick? Any insights on this would be super helpful!!

Ayurvedically speaking, curd, or dahi, is considered a heavy food that can lead to Kapha dosha aggravation when consumed inappropriately, especially during colder months. This doesn’t mean it causes cold directly, but it may contribute to an environment where cold-like symptoms could be more likely to appear, particularly if your pradkiti (body constitution) or Vikruti (current state) is already prone to Kapha imbalances.

Kaha dosha is related to qualities like cold, moistness, and heaviness, and when it is excessive, it can lead to symptoms like congestion or a runny nose. Therefore, if you are prone to respiratory issues, consuming curd in large quantities, especially at night or when it’s cold, might exacerbate these symptoms. It’s not about curd causing the cold by itself, but potentially increasing kapha, which can manifest as cold symptoms.

But there’s another side. Curd is a probiotic food packed with good bacteria that are beneficial for gut health and digestion (agni or digestive fire). To balance enjoying curd without fearing potential cold symptoms, consider having curd during midday when your digestie fire is strongest. Always ensure the curd is fresh and not sour, as sour foods can further aggravate Pitta and Kapha.

You might also try adding spices like pepper or ginger to curd, as these can mitigate the potential dampening effect of curd and support digestion. You mentioned having curd in smoothies; maybe consider using it with warming spices or mixing it with warm water during winter to help balance its cooling nature.

If you have an active cold, minimizing curd until symptoms subside might be prudent. Overall, it’s not about strictly avoiding curd but consciously consuming it in a way that aligns with your body’s needs and seasonal changes. If you balance your diet and lifestyle according to your Praikrti and the season, enjoying curd shouldn’t be problematic!
