is mulethi good for cough - #25547

I am dealing with this persistent cough for the last few weeks, and it’s really becoming annoying. I tried a few over-the-counter meds, but nothing seems to work. I remembered my grandmother always saying that is mulethi good for cough? She used to make us this sweet tea with mulethi when we were sick, and it really felt comforting. I did some research, and there’s tons of stuff online saying how mulethi helps with cough and throat irritation, but I’m not sure how to use it. Do I just chew on it, or is it better to make a syrup or something? Plus, how much should I take? I really want to avoid those nasty chemicals! I also wonder, are there any side effects? I have a bit of a sensitive stomach, and I don’t want to end up feeling worse than I already do. Honestly, every time I bring up mulethi to friends, they give me those skeptical looks. Just really hope to find some relief soon! Any advice would be super helpful!

Mulethi, also known as licorice root, is indeed a beneficial herb widely used in Ayurveda for respiratory issues, particularly coughs and throat irritation. It’s been praised for its soothing properties that can help calm an irritated throat and ease coughing. The sweet, demulcent qualities of mulethi make it particularly useful in cases where the cough is dry and throat feels scratchy.

You can use mulethi in several ways. One common method is to make mulethi tea. Here’s how you can do it: Take a small piece of mulethi root or about half a teaspoon of mulethi powder and add it to a cup of boiling water. Let it simmer for around 10 minutes. Strain and drink this tea warm, up to two times a day. It’s a comforting way to soothe the throat, but be sure not to overdo it, since excess licorice can lead to complications, particularly for those with high blood pressure.

If you prefer, you can also chew on a small piece of mulethi root. Doing this throughout the day can keep your throat moist and prevent coughing fits. However, since you mentioned having a sensitive stomach, it’s essential to start with very small amounts to see how your body reacts. Some individuals may experience digestive discomfort if they consume large quantities.

For any herbal remedy, moderation is key. Overconsumption of mulethi can lead to side effects such as water retention and elevated blood pressure due to its glycyrrhizin content. Given your sensitive stomach, keep your mulethi intake limited, and stop if you experience any stomach upset.

Always take into consideration any ongoing health conditions or prescriptions you might have—consult a healthcare provider if necessary. Remember, while mulethi can offer relief, persistent cough lasting several weeks should also be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying issues. Make sure to seek professional media advice, especially if your symptoms persist or worsen.
