I am really struggling with this persistent cough that just won't go away! It started a few weeks ago, and I thought it was just allergies or maybe a small cold. But like, I’ve been drinking warm water with honey, ginger tea, all the usual stuff. Then, I remembered I started consuming jaggery more regularly; I've been using it in my teas and even eating it straight as a sweet treat. Now I'm wondering, does jaggery increase cough? I mean, I feel like my throat gets even scratchier after having it sometimes. I read on some blogs that jaggery can cool down the body, but I'm not sure if that’s good or bad. Am I making this cough worse by eating jaggery? Or is it just my body reacting to something else? I really wanna kick this cough to the curb without having to go on medications that make me feel worse. Any advice on what to do about the jaggery or other natural remedies? Thanks!

hello jack, If you’ve been eating jaggery regularly and also dealing with a persistent cough, it’s worth noting that jaggery can sometimes aggravate a cough, especially if it’s dry, allergic, or throat-sensitive in nature. While jaggery is known to help with cold-related symptoms due to its warm potency, in some people it irritates the throat and may make coughing worse especially if eaten raw or in excess.

Since you’re experiencing scratchiness after consuming it, it’s best to avoid jaggery for a few days and see if symptoms improve. Instead, sip on mulethi (licorice) tea, turmeric milk, or ginger-tulsi decoction to ease the irritation.

You can also take Sitopaladi Churna (½ tsp) with honey twice daily after meals it balances Kapha and soothes the throat. Avoid cold, sour, or refrigerated items completely. If your cough lasts more than 2 weeks, it’s better to get a personalized herbal prescription and check if there’s an underlying imbalance like Ama (toxins) or Pranavaha Srotas blockage.

This means a sticky, heavy substance that can potentially intensify mucus production.

Your observation that your throat feels scratchier after consuming jaggery could be linked to an imbalance or sensitivity. It might indeed be aggravating your cough if your system doesn’t handle it well or if consumed in larger quantities. Consider if your general symptoms match up with a Kapha imbalance: heaviness, sluggishness, more mucus, are a few indicators.
