Hi, I have realised I get breathlessness on eating butter naan and onion together. I am sure there is some kind of food allergy which causes this. Any excercise, advice on food and remedy to overcome this ?

Age: 37

It sounds like you’re experiencing a reaction to butter naan and onions, possibly due to a sensitivity or mild food intolerance. Since you’re also on blood pressure medication, it’s important to be mindful of how certain foods or ingredients might interact with your medication or affect your symptoms.

Possible Causes: Butter Naan: The butter in naan can be rich in fats, which might lead to digestive discomfort and breathlessness if your body has difficulty processing high-fat foods. It could also be triggering acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which might cause breathlessness after eating. Onion: Onions, especially when eaten raw or in large quantities, can cause gas or bloating, which might affect your breathing, especially if you’re prone to acid reflux or have a sensitivity to certain foods. Steps to Manage Breathlessness: Dietary Adjustments:

Avoid or limit butter naan and raw onions, especially when eaten together. Try to observe if a different combination works better for your digestion and breath. Opt for whole grains like brown rice or millets instead of white flour naan, which may be easier on your digestion. Incorporate cooling foods like cucumbers, yogurt, and coconut to soothe the digestive system and avoid excess heat buildup in the body. Avoid heavy, greasy foods: Since you’re on BP medication, limit foods high in saturated fats like fried foods, as they can be harder to digest and might worsen bloating or discomfort. Consider anti-inflammatory herbs like ginger or turmeric (in moderation) to support digestion and reduce inflammation in the body. Breathing Exercises:

Deep Breathing: Practice diaphragmatic breathing (breathing deeply into the belly) to increase oxygen intake and relax the body. Pranayama: Techniques like Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) and Bhastrika (bellows breath) can help calm the nervous system and improve lung capacity. Physical Activity:

Light walking after meals can help with digestion and reduce any discomfort caused by bloating or heaviness. However, avoid intense exercise immediately after meals. Consultation:

Since you’re on BP medication, it’s important to discuss any dietary changes with your healthcare provider, especially if you suspect an allergy or food sensitivity. They may recommend food allergy testing or refer you to a nutritionist or gastroenterologist. If the symptoms persist or worsen, getting an allergy test or seeing a gastroenterologist could be helpful to pinpoint the exact cause of your breathlessness and develop a suitable treatment plan.

Breathlessness after eating butter naan and onions, huh? That’s definitely something worth looking into. While it could be some kind of food sensitivity, Ayurveda might look at it a bit differently. It could be linked to your digestive fire, or agni, not being robust enough to handle these foods together. Butter naan is heavy, oily and can aggravate Kapha dosha, while raw onions have some heating properties which might disturb Pitta dosha, especially if you’re prone to imbalances in these energies.

To tackle this, let’s start with boosting your digestive agni. A simple way to do this is try drinking warm ginger tea 20-30 minutes before you eat. Just brew a few slices of fresh ginger in hot water for a few minutes. If you notice an improvement, it shows your digestion needed that little kick.

Regarding food, maybe avoid combining fried foods with strong tasting ones like onions especially raw. Both items are kinda heavy on digestion when taken together. Instead, try something lighter like grilled or steamed options, focusing on easy-to-digest grains like quinoa or millets.

For exercise, gentle yoga poses can help. Try some deep breathing exercises (pranayama) such as Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing). Do it for 5-10 minutes daily; it helps balance your energies and calms the mind. These breathing techniques can also help increase lung capacity.

Importantly, monitor your symptoms. If breathlessness persists or gets worse, it’s crucial to see a medical professional. They might need to assess it under more serious conditions so don’t ignore persistent signs. But if it’s manageable, stick to balancing your diet, keeping your meals light and progressive enhancement of your digestion. Good luck figuring it out, your body’s usually pretty good at signaling what’s good for it!
