HELLO RAJESH,

WHAT IS IT -In lung fibrosis, the normal lung tissue (soft and elastic) slowly gets replaced by scar tissue (stiff and thick)

WHAT HAPPENS -Lungs cannot expand properly-> less oxygen enters blood-> patient feels breathless, tired, and sometimes has dry cough

WHY IT DEVELOPS -Exact cause is often unknown (idiopathic), but it may be due to long term irritation, autoimmune disorders, infections or environments exposure

NATURE OF DISEASE -It is chronic and progressive, meaning it does not go away completely, but with proper care, its progression can be slowed and quality of life improved

TREATMENT GOALS

1) Relives breathlessness and cough-> make breathing easier 2) Slow down scarring process-> reduce further damage 3) Strengthen lungs-> improve oxygen absorption 4) Balance vata and Kapha dosha-> reduce dryness + mucus 5) Boost immunity and energy (Ojas)-> better overall strength 6) Enhance quality of life-> better sleep, reduced fatigue, more stamina

INTERNAL MEDICATIONS

1) VASAKA KWATHA= 30 ml decoction twice daily after meals, for long term =luquifies mucus, eases breathing

2) PIPPALI RASAYANA= start with 500 mg daily, gradually increase to 2 gm/day with honey, for 40-60 days

3) SHITOPALADI CHURNA + ABHRAK BHASMA (120 putis)= 2 gm with honey twice daily for 3 months =strengthens lungs, reduces cough and breathlessness

4) CHYAWANPRASHA= 1 tsp daily with warm milk =immunity booster, nourishes tissues

5) ASHWAGANDHA CAPSULES= 500mg cap twice daily =rasayana, reduces fatigue, tissue healing

6) KANAKASAVA= 15ml with water twice daily after meals =for dry cough, dyspnoea, wheezing

7) TRIKATU CHURNA= 2gm with honey before meals for few weeks =improves digestion clears kapha channels

EXTERNAL THERAPIES

1) OIL MASSAGE with warm sesame oil-> balances vata , improves circulation

2) MILD STEAM THERAPY= after massage relieves chest tightness, clears kapha

3) NASYA= instill 2 drops of Anu taila in each nostril daily morning =nourishes nasal passages, improves prana flow

GENTLE BREATHING PRACTICES= do not do forcefuly -Anulom vilom= improves oxygenation -Bhramari= calms mind, reduces stress on lungs -Mild kapalbhati= clears mucus

YOGA ASANAS -Suptabaddha konasana -supported setu bandhasana -balasana

AVOID= strain, fast breathing or deep forceful pranayam

DIET -warm, freshly prepared light meals -moong dal soups, rice gruel, vegetables khichdi -spices= turmeric, ginger, garlic, black pepper in moderation -Cow’s ghee small amount daily= strengthens lungs and immunity -warm water herbal teas- tulsi, ginger, mulethi

AVOID -cold drinks, ice creams, refrigerated food -heavy, oily, fried, junk food -excess curd, sour and fermented food -exposure to cold wind, smoke, dust, chemical fumes

SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES -warm water sip therapy throughout the day -1/2 tsp turmeric with warm milk at night -Ginger + honey paste 1/2 tsp one daily to ease cough -Steam inhalation with tulsi leaves or ajwain seeds -chewing mulethi stick for soothing throat and breathing

-Pulmonary fibrosis cannot be fully reversed, but progression can be slowed, and symptoms reduced. -Ayurveda + allopathy is the best approach. Oxygen therapy and prescribed modern medicines should not be stopped. -Ayurvedic management focuses on balancing doshas, rejuvenating tissues, supporting lungs, and improving immunity. -With consistent care many patients experience better breathing, more stamina, fewer flare ups and improved quality of life

DO FOLLOW

HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL

THANK YOU

DR. MAITRI ACHARYA

Lung fibrosis is a serious condition where the lung tissue becomes thick and stiff, leading to breathing difficulties. While allopathic medicines and oxygen therapy provide crucial support in managing the symptoms, Ayurveda aims to complement these treatments by focusing on root causes and improving overall well-being.

In Ayurveda, this condition can be linked to an imbalance of the Vata and Kapha doshas within your father’s constitution. Managing his diet is essential. Encourage a diet that is light and warm; emphasize cooked vegetables, whole grains like brown rice or quinoa, and moong dal. Spices like ginger, turmeric, and cumin help soothe inflammation and improve digestion. Avoid cold, heavy, or processed foods as they can aggravate Kapha dosha.

Breathing exercises (Pranayama) such as Anulom-Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) and Bhramari can help improve lung capacity. Encourage daily practice for at least 15 minutes, preferably in a well-ventilated space. The fresh morning air is beneficial.

Consider trying herbal supplements, but consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner before adding anything to his regimen. Herbs like Tulsi (holy basil), Vasaka, and Pippali may support respiratory health. Tulsi tea can be sipped few times daily.

Steam inhalation with eucalyptus oil may provide relief from congestion. Ensure the room is adequately humidified to prevent lungs from drying out.

Engagement in gentle exercises like walking can facilitate better circulation, but monitor his oxygen levels carefully during physical activity.

Since lung fibrosis is complex, continue with prescribed medical treatment and regular medical checkups. Ayurveda supports overall well-being; however, it cannot replace conventional treatments. Always keep the healthcare provider in the loop regarding any changes or additions in his treatment plan.

Lung fibrosis, a condition where lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred, can limit breathing capabilities. Through the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, we can offer some supportive approaches. However, any alternative treatment must be adjunct to any necessary conventional medical care, especially since your father’s condition involves dependence on oxygen.

From an Ayurvedic standpoint, lung fibrosis can be seen as an imbalance in kapha and vata doshas, leading to the accumulation of ama (toxins) and affecting the respiratory system (pranavaha srotas). Integrating Ayurvedic principles can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Using herbs such as Vasaka (Adhatoda vasica), Pippali (Piper longum), and Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been known to support respiratory health by reducing mucus and inflammation. You can make a tea by boiling a combination of these herbs in water and have it twice daily.

In addition, considering practices like pranayama—particularly Anulom Vilom and Bhramari—can help in gently enhancing respiratory efficiency. Encourage your father to perform these breathing exercises for 10-15 minutes each day, ensuring he does so in a calm and relaxed environment.

Furthermore, maintaining a diet that pacifies kapha and vata doshas will be beneficial. Foods that are warm, light, and cooked, such as soups and stews, can be nourishing. Avoid dairy, caffeine, and processed foods to minimize ama.

Stay vigilant about any changes in symptoms, and it’s crucial to remain in close consultation with your father’s healthcare provider for primary care. This multifaceted approach can support his existing treatment while nurturing respiratory health within an Ayurvedic framework.
