how to use mulethi for cough for adults - #41909

I am really struggling with a persistent cough that just won’t go away. It started a couple of weeks ago, and nothing seems to help. I heard about mulethi and how people say it’s great for cough relief, but honestly, I have no idea how to use mulethi for cough for adults. I tried some over-the-counter stuff and even honey, but the cough is still there, especially at night when I’m trying to sleep. I read somewhere that you can make a tea with mulethi, but I’m not sure about the proportions or if there’s a certain way I should prepare it. I also wonder if I can mix it with anything, like ginger or lemon? Or is it best to stick to mulethi alone? I want to do this naturally if I can, since those syrups don’t seem to do much. Also, what about the dosage? Am I supposed to drink this tea multiple times a day?? I really would appreciate any tips on how to use mulethi for cough for adults because I just want some relief! It’s like my throat is on fire, and I’m feeling a bit desperate here. Thanks a lot!

Mulethi, also known as licorice root, is indeed a valuable remedy in Ayurveda for soothing a persistent cough. It is particularly effective because it supports mucous membrane health and helps alleviate throat irritation. Here’s a practical way to use mulethi as a tea to aid your condition.

To prepare mulethi tea, take approximately 1 teaspoon of dried mulethi root or powder, which you can usually find in Ayurvedic or health stores. Boil this with about 2 cups of water for 5 to 10 minutes, then let it steep for an additional 10 minutes. Strain the liquid to separate the herb residue and your tea is ready. For added benefit, you might consider adding a small piece of ginger or a squeeze of lemon after boiling—both have warming, cough-soothing properties that complement mulethi.

Regarding how often, you may drink this mulethi tea up to two times a day. Some might find it beneficial in the morning and once more before bed, particularly if coughing intensifies at night. Since your throat feels inflamed, you could also mix a teaspoon of honey into your tea after it cools down slightly because honey offers natural soothing effects.

However, caution is necessary as excessive consumption of mulethi, especially in people with high blood pressure, might cause issues. It’s usually safe to use in the short term but remember not to exceed using it regularly for more than a few weeks without medical guidance. If you happen to be on any medication or have other health conditions, it’s also wise to consult a healthcare practitioner to ensure there aren’t interactions or complications.

Make sure you stay hydrated and rest well, since these basic measures assist in recovery. If your cough does not improve or worsens, you should consider reaching out to a healthcare provider to rule out other underlying causes, as persistent symptoms beyond three weeks might necessitate a closer evaluation.

Mulethi, or licorice root, is indeed quite effective in soothing a persistent cough, and it works well when incorporated into a natural remedy routine for adults. Let’s get into how you can use it effectively.

To prepare a simple mulethi tea, you’ll want about half a teaspoon of powdered mulethi. If you have whole roots, you can crush a small piece instead. Bring around two cups of water to a boil, add the mulethi, and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes. Strain it, then let it cool slightly before sipping. You can enhance this remedy by adding a small slice of ginger, which has warming properties that can further aid in cough relief. Feel free to add a squeeze of lemon and a teaspoon of honey, which can soothe the throat and add a bit of flavor.

As for dosage, it’s typically fine to drink this tea two or three times a day. Given that mulethi has a sweet taste, it’s usually quite pleasant, but watch how your body reacts, as excessive use can raise blood pressure, especially in those predisposed to hypertension.

Moreover, in the Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, chronic cough might suggest an imbalance, often linked to aggravated Vata and Kapha doshas. Ensuring you’re keeping warm, avoiding cold foods, and integrating warming spices like ginger, turmeric, or pepper can be beneficial.

Since it’s mostly at night, consider using a humidifier in your room to keep the air moist; dry air can exacerbate a cough. Also, try elevating your head while sleeping to minimize throat irritation.

If your cough persists despite these approaches, it’s wise to consult with a healthcare provider, as it might be a symptom of an underlying issue that needs diagnosis and possibly conventional treatment.
