Hello, thank you for your reply but my question is about why? I’m doing a light kitchari fast etc and now have the mucus. Is it excess kapha being made liquid by the fast?

Yes

During a light kitchari fast with ginger tea and Triphala, the body often mobilizes excess Kapha. This can show up as thin, watery mucus in the throat, which is your body gently clearing it. It’s usually temporary and a normal part of the cleanse.

Keep warm fluids, stay hydrated, continue the light fast, and avoid cold or heavy foods—this watery mucus will usually clear on its own.

Why This Might Be Happening - Triphala’s cleansing action: It gently scrapes and detoxifies the gut. As “ama” (undigested toxins) begin to mobilize, the body may temporarily expel mucus through the throat or nasal passages. - Kapha response: Kitchari and fruit are light, but if digestion is slightly weak, kapha can accumulate and manifest as throat mucus. - Hydration + ginger tea: While you’re well hydrated, ginger tea is heating. Sometimes, when combined with cleansing herbs, it can loosen kapha, leading to dripping mucus. Supportive Adjustments - Reduce Triphala to once daily at night instead of twice, and observe if mucus lessens. - Add warm water with a pinch of trikatu (ginger, black pepper, pippali) in the morning to balance kapha. - Favor steamed or lightly cooked fruit instead of raw, which can increase mucus in some people. - Gentle steam inhalation with tulsi or ajwain for 2–3 minutes can clear throat passages WARM REGARDS DR. Thank you, Dr Anjali

✓Why it happens Triphala is strongly Kapha-reducing and mucolytic and it loosens and mobilizes accumulated mucus from sinuses, throat, lungs and upper respiratory tract. During fasting/kitchari (low digestive load), body starts autophagy + detoxification and stored ama/Kapha gets released leading to thin, watery mucus flows out Well-hydrated state + ginger tea further thins mucus = dripping/post-nasal drip sensation. ✓Is it bad? No , this is expected and positive in most cases (sign of cleansing). It usually peaks in first 7–14 days of consistent triphala/fasting and then reduces as Kapha clears. ✓What to do now Continue the fast & triphala if you feel overall well (no fever, severe weakness, or worsening). Steam inhalation – 10 min 2× daily with plain warm water or add pinch tulsi/rock salt (helps drain mucus faster). Warm salt water gargle – 3–4× daily (clears throat stickiness). Sip warm ginger + tulsi tea throughout day (keeps mucus thin & moving downward). Nasya (optional) – 2 drops warm Anu Taila or plain sesame oil in each nostril morning (prevents mucus from settling in sinuses). Rest more if needed – light activity only. ✓When to stop / reduce If mucus becomes thick/yellow/green, fever starts, or severe sinus pressure - stop triphala & consult doctor (possible secondary infection). If dripping becomes very annoying then reduce triphala to 1×/day or pause 2–3 days. Regards Dr Gursimran Jeet Singh MD Panchakarma

IT IS COMMON DURING LIGHT AYURVEDIC FASTS LIKE KITCHARI FRUIT AND GINGER TEA WITH TRIPHALA TO NOTICE THIN DRIPPING MUCUS IN THE THROAT THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM IS DETOXIFYING AND THE BODY STARTS CLEARING AMA OR TOXINS FROM THE MUCOSAL LININGS OF THE RESPIRATORY AND DIGESTIVE TRACTS THE MUCUS IS USUALLY THIN AND WATERY INDICATING THAT THE BODY IS ELIMINATING IT NATURALLY TRIPHALA HELPS IN GUT CLEANSING AND THIS CAN INDIRECTLY STIMULATE MUCUS RELEASE AS TOXINS ARE MOVED OUT YOUR HYDRATION IS ADEQUATE WHICH SUPPORTS THIS CLEANSING PROCESS YOU SHOULD CONTINUE WITH LIGHT FOODS AND HERBAL TEAS AVOID COLD DRINKS HEAVY OR PROCESSED FOODS AND IF NECESSARY GARGLE WITH WARM SALT WATER TO SOOTHE THE THROAT IF THE MUCUS BECOMES THICK COLORED OR ACCOMPANIED BY FEVER OR PAIN SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY THIS IS A SIGN OF INFECTION OTHERWISE THIS IS A NORMAL CLEANSING RESPONSE AND WILL SETTLE AS YOUR BODY ADJUSTS TO THE FAST

Hello Thanks for the clear explanation of what you’re feeling. That thin, watery mucus you’re experiencing during your Ayurvedic fast? It’s actually a pretty normal and even a good sign that your body’s getting rid of stuff – it’s not a sickness. Let me explain it from an Ayurvedic perspective: How Ayurveda Sees It You’re having: –Kitchari –Fruits –Ginger tea –Triphala twice a day –Regular fasting This mix really gets your digestive fire going and starts burning off toxins. The mucus is happening because: Your Kapha and Ama (that’s like sticky waste) are liquefying. As your digestion gets better, the Kapha and Ama stored your: –Sinuses –Throat –Lymph nodes –Stomach …starts to melt and drain out through your throat and nose, which are the closest exits. That’s what makes the mucus: –Thin –Watery –Dripping –Not thick, yellow, or infected This is called Kapha Vilayana basically, the detox drainage phase. It means your cleanse is doing its job. Why Triphala Makes It Happen Triphala: –Cleans Kapha –Scrapes away mucus (Lekhana) –Detoxifies your colon and sinuses It pulls toxins from your: -Intestines -Liver -Sinuses -Throat …and gets rid of them through mucus. So, that drip means you’re getting rid of old mucus buildup. When to Worry It’s only a problem if you also have: –Fever –Thick, yellow/green mucus –A bad smell –Chest congestion –Pain Since you don’t have those, it’s just pure detox. What to Do About It 1 Don’t stop fasting! Stopping now could trap those loosened toxins back inside. 2 Try these to help with drainage: Warm salt water gargle ½ teaspoon of rock salt in warm water Do this 2–3 times a day It’ll help clear your throat faster. 3 Steam Just plain steam, or steam with ginger water, once a day. 4. *Drink warm ginger water& Skip the cold fruit juices for now. 5 Cut back on fruit for a bit Fruit can increase Kapha and mucus. Stick to: –Kitchari –Vegetable soups –Ginger tea Something extra you could try (if it’s bothering you): If the drip is really annoying: 👉 Try ½ tsp of Sitopaladi churna with honey twice a day What to Expect Next In 2–4 days: –The mucus should stop –Your energy will go up –Your digestion will be better –Your skin might clear up –Less bloating –Your mind will feel clearer This is just the cleanse phase before you start feeling really good Warm Regards Dr. Snehal Vidhate

Thank you, Dr Snehal Vidhate.

As u r consuming ginger tea and Triphala both these have kapha chedhana property means it will break down the phlegm and so the liquified kapha is drippling down so no need to worry now start with Same ginger tea and drink more of warm water so that the kapha will be cleared Thank you

When digestion becomes lighter and agni starts improving the body begins to mobilize stored ama and excess kapha from deeper tissues this often shows up as thin watery mucus in the throat or mild sinus drainage this type of mucus is usually a sign that kapha is liquefying and moving out rather than a sign of new illness since it has been less than a week and you are well hydrated and there are no specific triggers it appears more like a cleansing response rather than infection Triphala taken twice daily along with ginger tea can stimulate elimination and sometimes this movement brings kapha upward toward the throat before it leaves the system you may reduce Triphala to once at night for a few days and observe the response continue warm fluids but avoid excess fruit especially in the evening and make sure fruits are taken separately from kitchari if there is no fever no thick yellow or green mucus no throat pain and no fatigue then this is likely temporary and part of the body adjusting during detox if symptoms increase or persist beyond two weeks then further assessment would be needed for now stay calm keep the diet simple warm and easy to digest and allow the body to complete the elimination process naturally

Thank you, Dr Shushma

HELLO, In your case (thin, clear mucus , short duration, during khichdi + trial cleanse), this is most likely kapha liquification due to improved digestive fire and ama (toxin) pachana (removal). Management should be gentle kapha-shamana without stopping the cleanse abruptly ADJUST THE DIET Continue -warm, freshly cooked meals -ginger tea (small sips, warm- not very strong) MODIFY -reduce raw fruits temporarily -prefer stewed apple or pear with cinnnamon -avoid banana, yogurt, cold foods, smoothies ADD -pinch of black pepper + dry ginger in khichdi -small amount of cumin + ajwain while cooking GOAL= support agni (digestive fire) without aggravating pitta MODIFY TRIPHALA USE If mucus increased after starting triphala -reduce to once at night -or reduce the dose by 25-50% Triphala can mobilise kapha from upper GI- sometimes temporary throat drainage happens KAPHA REDUCHING REMEDIES MORNING -warm water + pinch dry ginger + pinch black pepper AFTER MEALS -1/2 tsp honey + pinch trikatu (lick slowly) - avoid heating honey GARGLE (once daily) -warm water + turmeric + rock salt LIFESTYLE -avoid daytime sleeping -light sweating - gentle walk, mild yoga -steam inhalation with plain water if heaviness IF MUCUS PERSISTS > 7-10 DAYS Consider -SITOPALADI CHURNA + TALISADI CHURNA= 1 tsp with honey twice daily after meals STOP CLEANSE AND SEEK EVALUATION IF -yellow/green mucus -fever -sinus pain -chest congestion -weakness Your fast is mobilizing mild kapha from the stomach and upper channels This is usually a transition phase ans settles in a few days as channels clears DO FOLLOW HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL THANK YOU DR.
