is alcohol veg or non veg - #23795

Paisley

I am really confused about something I came across recently. My friend and I were chatting, and there was this whole debate about whether alcohol is veg or non veg. I mean, I've always thought of it as just a drink, you know? But then they mentioned some stuff about how certain types of alcohol could have animal-derived fining agents or things like that. It’s just wild! Last weekend, I went to a party and they served some wine that, according to my friend, might not be entirely vegan? I can't remember the details, but she said something about how the process might involve fish bladders or something?! I looked it up, and now I’m uncertain – if there’s any acohol that's considered non veg, does that mean I’ve been consuming non veg unknowingly? Like, what about beer? Is that also a problem? Do all wines go through a similar process? I’m kinda leaning towards vegetarianism and want to make informed choices. Any insights on if alcohol is veg or non veg and how to tell? Thanks!

The distinction between vegetarian and non-vegetarian alcohol indeed, turns into a bit of a grey area. Generally, the primary ingredients of alcohol such as grains, fruits, and sugars make them vegetarian by themselves. However, as you’ve pointed out there are certain alcohols, specifically wines and beers, that might use animal-derived fining agents during production! These fining agents include substances like isinglass (from fish bladders), gelatine, egg whites or casein (derived from milk) and occasionally, they are used to clarify and filter the drink.

When it comes to wines, not all of them utilize these fining agents. There are wines labeled as “vegan” or “organic” that assure no animal products were used in their production. Checking the bottle or researching the brand you’re buying from will help you ensure it aligns with your vegetarian choices.

Beer, too, can sometimes involve animal products depending on the brewery’s practices. But several popular and craft beers are entirely plant-based, and there are brands and breweries that specify their beer as “vegan-friendly.”

If the vegetarian lifestyle is the path you’re choosing, it’s encouraged to look for labels on the bottles, as many producers now indicate if they’re vegan/vegetarian; alternatively, you’ll have to reach out to the brewery or winery. Some online resources provide databases or lists of veg-friendly alcohol, so those might be handy too.

In Ayurveda, alcohol is seen from a different lens. Usually, it’s considered heating to the body and can agitate pitta, so moderation is key. If you’re choosing to indulge, aligning with quality and purity like what’s ‘sattvic’, even in alcohol, is beneficial. Look for lesser-processed options that support your constitution, without excess additives or involved processes. But remember, balance is the essence of Ayurveda—being mindful about these choices, will naturally lead you closer to wellbeing!

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
