can we eat spinach and curd together - #23912

Noah

I am really confused about whether can we eat spinach and curd together or not. I’ve been trying to eat healthier lately, and I've read some articles saying it's a bad combo. But the other day, my friend made this delicious curry with spinach and a yogurt sauce, and I loved it! Now, I'm gripped with doubt—should I avoid it? I mean, I’ve been having the spinach and curd thing for a while (like a few weeks!) and don’t feel anything terrible, but I wonder if that’s just luck? Sometimes, after eating it, I feel a bit bloated, I can’t tell if that’s normal or if it’s just me not digesting it well. On top of that, I keep hearing different things about food combinations in Ayurveda; like, some say it’s a big no-no while others swear by it. Would love to hear your thoughts! Can we eat spinach and curd together? Are there any specific ways to eat them, or things I should avoid? Just trying to find my way through this health journey!

Combining spinach and curd is often debated within Ayurvedic circles due to the intricate nature of food combinations. First, it’s important to understand that Ayurveda emphasizes on harmonizing food with your unique constitution, or ‘prakriti’. Spinach is leafy green with a predominately kapha-pitta constitution while curd or yogurt is cooling and can increase kapha.

From a classical Ayurveda perspective, combining two foods that have different effects on your doshas is considered not ideal. Spinach is slightly heavy and can be pitta-aggravating if not cooked well, whereas curd is cooling and can increase kapha and pitta if consumed in excess. When both are eaten together, it may lead to digestive discomfort for some people reason why you experienced bloating.

Yet, not everyone reacts the same way to food, and in your case it might be that the combination isn’t causing any overt harm—but if you’re noticing bloating, your body might be signaling a subtle incompatibility. If you enjoy them together, you can take some steps to improve the digestibility.

Try having them as a part of well-cooked dish rather than uncooked. When spinach is cooked properly, its pitta-aggravating qualities are reduced. Additionally, you could add digestive spices such as cumin, coriander, or ginger to enhance your agni, or digestive fire, which helps in breaking down and assimilating food more efficiently.

Consume curd during the daytime when your digestive fire is strongest, and considering having it in a small amount. It is advisable to not eat cold curd straight from the fridge, bring it to room temperature or slightly warm it before consuming.

Lastly, if you’re still unsure, observe how your body feels closely after consuming this combination. Stick to small quantities and listen to your body’s response over time. If discomfort persists, it might be beneficial to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to get personalized advice based on your ‘dosha’ type and digestive health.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
