how much honey a day - #23914

Thomas

I am really confused about how much honey a day is safe or even beneficial for me. Last week, I went to check up at my doc’s office, and my blood sugar levels were kinda high. She mentioned that I should watch my sugar intake closely, but I’ve also read that honey can be great for health in moderation. But like, how much honey a day should I even consider? I've been putting a spoonful in my tea, but maybe that's too much? I started using honey instead of sugar about a month ago, thinking it’ll help with my cravings. That's actually when I noticed my energy dipped sometimes, like, I feel very sleepy after lunch, which never used to happen. Should I be worried? I mean, I love the taste but now I’m unsure if it’s worth it. How much honey a day can I have without messing up my health, really? I know some say it's natural and all, but too much of even a good thing can't be good, right? Any advice would be super helpful!!

When it comes to honey, moderation truly is the key, especially when you’re keeping an eye on your blood sugar levels. Even though honey is a natural sweetener and brings various health benefits, it still contains sugars. Generally speaking, if you don’t have any significant health issues, about one to two teaspoons (not tablespoons) a day can be a reasonable amount, assuming you’re not consuming other forms of added sugars during the day.

In Ayurveda, we’re concerned about managing the balance of doshas, particularly ensuring that your Kapha isn’t aggravated, as excess sweetness can elevate this dosha, contributing to lethargy and weight gain. The mild dose of honey you mentioned, a teaspoon in your tea, is generally acceptable, but your symptoms suggest it might be another sign you’re experiencing imbalances.

Your energy dips and post-lunch sleepiness might be the result of excess Kapha or even some digestive fire (agni) getting weakened. Maybe try spacing your honey consumption out and not immediately after meals. Also, focusing on balancing your diet with enough fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins might help stabilize blood sugar levels and provide sustained energy.

Another consideration is timing. You might try consuming honey in the morning or early hours when your metabolism is more active, avoiding late evening or night. It’s also worth exploring how your digestive fire responds to this practice by monitoring energy levels and symptoms carefully.

In addition to diet, daily outdoor walks, yoga, or light exercise can be invaluable in balancing Kapha and boosting energy without risky interventions. Monitoring your body’s response to the honey is crucial—if symptoms persist, re-evaluating the quantity or eliminating it might be necessary.

Always continue close communication with your primary healthcare provider, especially for your blood sugar concerns. If you notice significant energy dips or changes with these adjustments, further investigation might be necessary. Prioritize health by sticking to small, manageable changes, and you’ll likely find a balance that suits you well.
