does curd make you fat - #24422

Henry

I am really confused about this whole dairy thing! My friend keeps saying that curd makes you fat, and I don’t know what to believe. I’ve been trying to eat healthier, but I love having curd with my meals. It just feels like a staple for me, you know? I read somewhere that it's great for digestion and all, and honestly, I've noticed I feel lighter after eating it. But then my friend mentioned that consuming too much can lead to weight gain. Like, does curd make you fat or what? I've been monitoring my weight, and I haven’t seen much change, but I also add it to every meal! I’m just worried that I could be sabotaging my efforts without realizing. Should I cut down on my curd intake? Or is there a way to include it without worrying about weight gain? I feel really lost here!

The relationship between curd and weight gain is not as straightforward as saying it simply makes you fat or not. In Ayurveda, curd is acknowledged for its nourishing and digestive properties; it’s considered useful when consumed in moderation. It’s heavy, slow-digesting in nature, which can balance Vata dosha and Pacify Kapha dosha. However, due to its heaviness, it might increase Kapha if taken in excess — leading to weight gain if not balanced properly with other lifestyle and dietary habits.

If you’re worried about weight gain, consider the quantity and timings of your curd intake. In Ayurveda, it is believed beneficial to consume curd during lunchtime, when your digestive fire, or agni, is strongest, enabling better digestion and absorption. Limit consumption at night time or night and avoid eating it during breakfast. As a staple, include it in a limited amount daily, instead, try incorporating buttermilk (known as takra) which is light and easy to digest — simply mix a small amount of yogurt with water and a pinch of roasted cumin powder for taste and improved digestion, it’s traditionally seen as more beneficial for digestion without the weight concern.

Consider your overall diet: ensuring it is balanced with adequate fibers, proteins, and healthy fats. Practicing mindful eating, regular physical activity, and yoga or pranayama can support maintain your weight. Lastly, notice how your body responds; Ayurveda strongly values individualized experience. If your weight isn’t changing and you feel good physically and mentally, there’s no need to stress over it, just moderate your intake and balance with physical activities. Remember to listen to your body.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
