how to take ghee on empty stomach - #24993

Ellie

I am really curious about how to take ghee on empty stomach because I’ve heard such great things about it but just don’t know if I’m doing it right. Last month, I decided to give it a try because my digestion has been pretty off lately—like sometimes bloating and other times just feeling heavy. I read that ghee could help, but when I tried taking it straight in the morning, it felt a bit weird. I mean, I’ve been told you should have it first thing before breakfast. Like, do you mean a spoonful or should I mix it with something? Also, how much is enough? Sometimes I just guess and take a big dollop, but then I start wondering if I’m overdoing it. I’ve even heard people say you should warm it a bit first, but then I think, like, wouldn’t that make it less effective? And is it true that it can really help with digestion or am I just falling for some fad? Would love to hear anyone’s thoughts on how to take ghee on empty stomach!

Taking ghee on an empty stomach can indeed be beneficial if done correctly! According to traditional Ayurveda, starting your day with ghee can nourish the body and support digestion. The key is moderation and method, ensuring you achieve the benefits without over burdening your system.

Firstly, the amount—start small. Begin with about 1 teaspoon. This is generally sufficient for most constitutions, especially if it’s new to your regimen. A spoonful more than that could potentially be too much for some people, leading to digestive discomfort, particularly if your Agni (digestive fire) is already weak.

Ghee can be consumed plain or mixed with warm water. Yes, warming it a bit is beneficial and does not decrease its potency. In fact, warm ghee is easier to assimilate. You can gently warm some water (not boiling) and stir the ghee into it until it melts. This can create a soothing start to your morning routine, preparing your digestive system for the day ahead.

As for timing, taking ghee first thing in the morning before consuming anything else allows it to act efficiently in lubricating the gastrointestinal tract, reduces bloating, and assists proper elimination of toxins, balancing the Vata dosha which is often related to digestive issues. However, observe your body after trying this for a week or so – this will guide you in understanding whether your digestion is improving. It’s advised to listen to your body. If you feel heavy or discomfort, it might indicate excess Kapha increase or improper digestion.

Of course, if you find this method not perfectly fitted to you or if the symptoms persist, it could be worthwhile to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to explore more personalized solutions. Remember, Ayurveda is all about personal balance, and how each individual responds to treatments can vary.
