is curd with sugar good for health - #25534

David

I am really confused about this whole curd with sugar thing. A few weeks ago, I started feeling really bloated and gassy. My friend mentioned that maybe I should add some curd with sugar to my diet because she swears by it for digestion. But like, is curd with sugar good for health? I'm not sure if she just meant plain curd or how much sugar is okay to mix in? I tried it a couple of times, like I’d eat a bowl of curd with sugar after meals, but I can't tell if it's helping or making things worse. Some days I feel fine, but other days it doesn’t seem to sit right. I've read mixed things online about how curd is good for gut health, but then I see others saying sugar is a no-go for overall wellness! Is curd with sugar good for health or should I just stick to plain curd? Anyone else tried this and felt something or noticed changes? I'm kinda lost here and just want to feel better without making my bloating worse!!!

Curd, known for its cooling and digestive properties in Ayurveda, can be beneficial for the gut when consumed properly. However, the addition of sugar can complicate its effects, so it’s good you’re asking about this before making it a regular part of your diet. Curd in its natural form can help balance Vata and Pitta doshas, due to its cool and soothing nature, but it is also heavy and can aggravate Kapha if eaten improperly or in excessive amounts. Adding sugar, especially in large amounts, can increase Kapha even more, potentially leading to issues like bloating or sluggish digestion.

When it comes to managing bloating, it’s essential to strengthen your Agni, or digestive fire. Eating curd with a little sugar can be okay if it helps you enjoy the meal, but moderation is key. A small teaspoon of sugar should be sufficient. You might also consider having the curd with a pinch of black pepper or cumin instead, which can help stimulate the digestive fire and reduce bloating.

If you notice any discomfort after eating curd with sugar, try switching to plain curd, or even better, make it a buttermilk instead by churning curd with water and adding some spices, like roasted cumin powder or asafoetida. Drink this after meals, as it can aid digestion and help with that bloating feeling.

Also, the time of day you consume curd plays a role. Avoid eating it at night, as this could disturb digestion and increase Kapha-related symptoms like congestion or bloating. Consume curd during lunchtime when your Agni is at its peak strength.

Finally, keeping a food diary can be helpful. Note down what you eat and how you feel afterward, which can give clues to patterns between your diet and digestive symptoms. Always tune into your body’s responses and adjust your diet accordingly.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
