can we eat dahi with fish - #25679

Grace

I am looking for some advice here. I recently heard that eating dahi with fish is a huge no-no, and this got me thinking about my own habits. My family has always enjoyed fish curry with a side of dahi, and we’ve never thought twice about it. But now, after my last dinner, where I had a nice spicy fish curry with some creamy dahi, I felt kinda bloated and uneasy afterward. Was that just a coincidence or I shouldn’t be mixing these two? I mean, we always believed dahi is cooling and helps with digestion, but does it not work with fish? A friend mentioned that combining dahi with fish can lead to bad digestive issues. Is that true?! I really love this combo and don’t want to stop but am worried what this might mean for my health. Can we eat dahi with fish and still be okay? Looking for any insights from you guys, please!

Combining dahi (yogurt) with fish, while common in some culinary traditions, is generally discouraged in Ayurveda due to their conflicting qualities. In Ayurvedic terms, fish is considered to have a heating effect, while yogurt is cooling and heavy. When these two are combined, they may create an agni (digestive fire) imbalance, leading to indigestion or ama (toxins) accumulation in the body. This mismatch in energies can sometimes result in tummy discomfort like bloating, which you experienced after the fish curry feast.

However, it is not just the thermal nature but also the digestive properties of these foods that Ayurveda warns against pairing together. Fish and yogurt both are protein rich, making them difficult to digest when combined, stressing the digestive system even further. This doesn’t imply that everyone will experience issues every time, but for those with sensitive digestion, it might result in discomfort like bloating or more serious digestive upset over time.

If you’d like to enjoy this combo without discomfort, consider having them separately. Perhaps have fish during lunch and yogurt with dinner, or consume them hours apart to reduce digestive conflict. Alternatively, you could try consuming yogurt with a pinch of cumin or pepper, potentially aiding digestion, though this may only provide limited relief.

Keep an eye on your body’s reaction after meals. If symptoms like bloating persist, it might be wise to adjust this meal pairing. From an Ayurvedic point of view, it’s also essential to consider your dosha and prakriti to personalize dietary choices even further, ensuring you’re not exacerbating any imbalances.

In essence, while occasional indulgence might not be harmful to every individual, regular intake is best carefully monitored. Remember, Ayurveda’s holistic view encourages aligning food habits with individual constitution and balancing energies within the body for optimal health.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
