is it good to have curd at night - #40437

Michael

I am really confused about whether is it good to have curd at night. My mom always says it’s not a good idea, but I just love it, especially after a spicy meal. Last week, I ate some really rich food during the day and thought having a bowl of curd at night would help with my digestion. But I ended up tossing and turning all night long, feeling bloated and uncomfortable. I was doing some reading online about food habits and found mixed opinions on is it good to have curd at night. Some say it's great for digestion due to probiotics, while others insist it'll lead to acidity and bad sleep. Like, what am I even supposed to believe?! I tried checking with a friend who follows Ayurveda and she mentioned that having curd could be OK if it's seasoned with some cumin and maybe a little bit of salt. It really got me thinking if the preparation truly matters when considering if is it good to have curd at night. Anyway, I would really appreciate some advice on this. Should I steer clear of curd after sundown, or are there ways to make it more suitable for nighttime? Like, should I just stick to other options? Really curious to hear what doctors say about this!

In Ayurveda, curd is generally advised against at night due to its kapha-increasing properties. Consuming it in the evening can lead to difficulties in digestion, increasing symptoms like bloating or heavines. It’s also believed to produce mucus and possibly disturb the balance of the doshas, particularly if consumed in excess or without carefully considering its preparation.

However, if you find yourself in situations where you strongly desire curd during the evening, there are indeed some modifications that can make it a bit more suitable. Light seasoning, such as adding a pinch of cumin powder or a sprinkle of black pepper, along with salt, can aid in digestion and lessen its kapha-enhancing effect. The heating quality of these spices may help counteract the cold and heavy essence of curd, promoting better assimilation.

If digestion is a concern, remember curd should always be fresh, ideally not more than a day old. Sour curd or improperly fermented curd can further disrupt digestion, leading to bloating or acidity, particularly in vata or pitta predominant individuals. Choice of accompaniments also matters, try consuming fresh, unsweetened curd rather than pre-packaged versions often containing additives.

For those particularly sensitive to nighttime indigestion, you might consider alternatives. Digestively, a glass of buttermilk seasoned with a pinch of roasted cumin, or jeera, might serve as a beneficial substitute, offering similar probiotic benefits with less risk of discomfort. Buttermilk, being more watery and less concentrated than curd, is typically lighter on the stomach, facilitating digestion.

Lastly, exploring options beyond dairy, soothing herbal teas such as ginger or chamomile may not only improve digestion but also aid in relaxation and better sleep. In any case, awareness and moderation should be top priority when considering after-dinner dietary choices.

Eating curd at night is generally discouraged in Siddha-Ayurvedic practice. Curd, or yogurt, has heavy and cooling properties and can disrupt the doshic balance, particularly increasing kapha and vata in the system. Consuming curd, especially at night, might lead to digestive discomfort, which explains the bloating and unease you experienced. The body’s agni, or digestive fire, tends to be weaker in the evening, and introducing curd can further slow digestion, leading to issues like the bloating you felt.

However, there are exceptions. If you’re accustomed to eating curd at night, you might try some modifications. Seasoning with warm spices like cumin, black pepper, or a pinch of rock salt can slightly mitigate its kapha-provoking nature and aid digestion. Small modifications can make a difference, but note, these don’t guarantee the same level of digestive ease for everyone.

If you experience continuous discomfort, it might be wiser to indulge in curd in the morning or afternoon when digestion is typically stronger. Alternatively, consider a glass of buttermilk with some added jeera powder—it’s lighter and supports digestion better at night.

Bear in mind, individual constitution or prakriti and any specific imbalances should guide dietary choices. Consulting with a practitioner who understands your unique doshic make-up might provide the personalized advice you need. Watch for any persistent digestive issues and seek proper medical advice, especially if symptoms worsen. Meanwhile, maintaining a routine that aligns with your constitutional nature will promote improved overall wellness.
